This element chlorine is a poisonous, corrosive, greenish-yellow gas that has a sharp, suffocating odor and is two and half times heavier than air. The symbol of this element is C1; in Atomic Number are number 17, the weight of this atomic is 35.453.
Uses
Although this chemical is poisonous and harmful to human, we still use it today for example: drinking water, swimming pools etc. It could also be found in pulp and paper bleaching products. Chlorine was the first gas used in chemical warfare in World War I. The gas can be easily turn to liquid by cooling or pressures of a few atmospheres at normal temperature.
History
The name Chlorine was by Sir Humphry Davy in1810, who proved it to be an element. Gaseous chlorine is a human invention, first introduced in late nineteenth century and mass-produced by breaking sodium and chlorine bond in chloride, commonly known as salt. Since than, we started to have more and more product which contain chlorine. We both had use this element in World War I and World War II and many soldiers were killed. The business of this element chlorine has grown to five billion dollars per year just in North America pass fifty years.
The Essay on Chemical Elements Atomic Number
At first glance, nature appears to consist of countless numbers of very different materials. The world thus appears to be an extremely complex mixture of many different materials. But philosophers and scientists have long held another view of the world. They have found it difficult to believe that nature is really as complex as it appears to be. Instead, they have assumed that the many different ...
Occurrence
Chlorine displaces the less electronegative halogens from compounds. The displacement of bromides, for example, occurs according to the following equation:
Chlorine is a chemical element; it is obtained mainly from salt water by running an electric current through the solution.
Social Significance
Most elements has a good and a bad side, the good side of chlorine is a small amounts of liquid chlorine are mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria. Many other compounds of chlorine exist. Combined with metals, chlorine forms chlorides, such as sodium chloride, and with metal and oxygen, chlorates, those chlorine are also helps our everyday life household products.
Environmental/ Health Concerns
Pure chlorine is never found in nature, chlorine is never found in the nature. This element is not just harmful for human, its pollutants to environment too. Chlorine is so harmful that it creates wastes such as PCBs and CFCs in to our water and lands. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) is so harmful that could cost birth defects and depressing immunity. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) cost poking large holes in the ozone layer. Those harmful wastes can also destroy animal and wild life.
Personal Thought
I think today human is destroying this planet big time, those harmful chemicals we use must be ban, and otherwise we will destroy the wildlife and habitat. I think we should put money into research to discover new non-harmful chemical to replace the harmful ones. Animal have life, and so does we, we are also animals. God didn’t create us to destroy this planet, so protect and treasure it.
