Sean Penn, born in Los Angeles, California is the second son to Eileen Ryan and Leo Penn. He was born in 17th August 1960. The mother Eileen is a writer while Leo is a writer. His father was from a Jewish background while the mother is a half Italian and half Irish. In most films that Sean has performed, he has always been described as a powerhouse film performer who is capable of engaging in intensely moving work. He has moved from strength to strength during his career in the film industry. His stormy private life and the political viewpoints have always made him attract a lot of media’s attention (Sean Penn – Biography, 2014: 12).
Penn is said to have appeared for the first time in the roles he was undertaking as a string headed youth. Such roles he played for example in the Film Taps (1981) where he played the role of a military cadet trying very hard to defend the academy from being closed down. In the 1982, he acted as fast taking surfer stoner (Harden, Marcia & William, 2008: 12).
This was in the film, Fast Time at Ridge Mont High. The fans were happy about his obvious talent which he used effectively. He contributed to the success of several films like the Falcon and the Snowman. In this film, he worked closely with Timothy Hutton and through this, they succeeded in their mission. He also appeared together with Robert De Niro in the film which was described as being uneven. This was We’re No Angels. These are just a few samples of what he did.
The period between 1990 and 2000 is said to be moment when Sean got the attention of many. The critics referred to him as being mature, accomplished as well as versatile actor. He had several strings of dynamic performance in quite a number of first class films. In Carlito’s Way (1993), Sean acted the role of a corrupt lawyer wearing thin rimmed classes. He had fizzy hair in this film. He found himself in trouble trying to plead with a nun to save his life. This he did in the Dead Man Walking. This is the film which is said that he did his best. He did not only act but also directed films. The first film which he directed was the Indian Runner which he did quite well in 1991. This film majored on two brothers who had very opposing arguments or maxims concerning life. He also directed The Crossing Guard and Jack Nicholson in 1995. The two films received positive reviews from the critics.
He entered the new millennium with change of roles. He played the role of a disabled father who was trying very hard to fight for the welfare of his daughter. He did so perfectly that he received another Oscar nomination. He emerged victorious in the Oscar Best Award (Sean Penn: His Life and Films – New York Times, 2014: 12).
From the description, it is crystal clear that Sean Penn has done so much in the film industry. He is a role model and an encouragement to many people. It is because of these qualities that he is seen as one of the most controversial Hollywood actor. He has also been described as being gifted and progressive. He is an inspiration to many.
