Some of the influences of self-mutalation, Self Injury, Masication, and Self Harm come from various sources. In some cases people saw it on television and mimiced what they saw. Other influences may be from watching or hearing about friends or adults doing it, or reading about it on the internet and in magazines. Many of the television shows today show blood, guts, violence, suicide, and sometimes self harm. An anynomous person said “I saw it when I was in sixth grade, and I thought they made it look cool”. The impact that T.V has on a young mind is incredible.
It can make them think they can do something without having short or long term effects. T.V doesn’t show the reality of the seriousness of these issues. It shows fame, glamour, money, and many other things. You may be young or old while sitting at a table or on the floor, and seeing someone you love or care about deeply hurt themself deliberatly. The impact that this has on you is trumendous, and you may try to copy what they did. At first you may not realize what this is doing to you.
After awhile you become dependent on self-mutalization as a resort to your stress, anger, depression, and all the other feelings you feel inside. When walking in the hallway at work or school, you might hear someone talk about hurting themselves and how it releases the pain. You decide to try it, and after awhile the scars just bring back memories of them bad days. Then you start to talk in the hallways at school or work, and another person picks up on it and tries it. You can find anything on the internet today, and some of these things set a bad example for gullable minds. When reading about self-mutalization, another anynomous person said, “I saw it on the internet, and they were talking about how it made all your troubles go away…then I tried it and it just made more problems.” Along the same lines as the internet is magazines. Magazines show beautiful perfect looking people along with interesting articles. In one magazine there was an article on stars who cut themselves. To a reader reading this in a magazine they might get the idea that if stars did it, then they can do it and be “cool” like them.
