The Globe Theatre also known as the Shakespeare Globe Theatre was not only one of most famous playhouse’s of all time, but the play house where Shakespeare performed many of his greatest plays. Built from oak, deal, and stolen playhouse frames, the 3 storey, 3000 capacity Globe Theatre, co-owned by William Shakespeare has become almost as famous as the playwright himself. On the expiry of the lease of London’s oldest playhouse, The Theatre, north of the city walls in 1598, its timbers was dismantled by Richard Burbage and his brother Cuthbert, and then taken by cart to a site outside the city, on the other side of the Thames at Southwark. Its roof was embellished with a globe and the Latin quotation from Petronius, “to tus mund us a git historio nem” (all the world’s a stage), was carved over the front of the theatre. William Shakespeare and four other players in the Chamberlain’s Men, were shareholders in the theatre and it staged its first plays in 1599. But in 1613, a cannon, discharged during a performance of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, set fire to the thatched roof and destroyed the building.
The theatre was rebuilt in 1614 but 30 years later, it was razed by the Puritans. The American actor, Sam Wanamaker, founded a project to rebuild the theatre near the site of the original in 1970. The building work on “Shakespeare’s Globe”, as it is known, finally began in 1987. The newly appointed artistic director, Mark Ry lance, began working towards the first production in the new building, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, also taking the part of Proteus..
