Marriage is the union between a man and a woman. If a person gets married he or she has legal rights over the relationship and legal possessions that they have with their partner. Marriage is usually done with the opposite sex. However, in the year 2004, the states of Massachusetts had decided to allow same sex marriage (religoustolerance. org, 2007).
Marriage between the same sex is not widely accepted even in the United States. As of the year 2007, there are only two states that had allowed same-sex marriage. These are Massachusetts and Iowa (www. kcci. com, 2007).
On the other hand, there are states that allow Civil Union between the same sex. These are the states New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia. There have been several views on same sex marriage in the United States. In the year 2004, CBS News had surveyed several Americans regarding the issue. Results show that 22% are approved of legal marriage, 33% are approved of civil unions and 40% do not want to recognize marriage nor civil unions. From the results of the survey, adding both the people approved of legal marriage and civil unions, 55% of the population are approved of same sex relationships.

However, civil unions is not the same as a marriage. Having a civil union gives some rights that the marriage also has like child adoption. Although there are still people who opposes the idea of same-sex partnership but in the future, the number of states that allow gay marriage might increase as time goes by. Both sides have its own reasons why gay marriage should not be allowed or should not be disallowed. People do not like same-sex marriage because most people think that marriage is an institution between one man and a one woman.
(www. bidstrup. com), the child being raised by the same-sex couple may have an effect on the psychological development of the child. Another reason is that some think of gay relationships as immoral. Another is the biblical context that marriage is for procreation and ensuring the continuation of the species. There are several other reasons why people think same sex marriage should not be allowed. However, looking at the different reasons to not allow marriage of same sex, the reasons have several loopholes.
Marriage between two persons means that both persons love each other and wants to be together. However, there are those people that chooses to marry because they need to like political marriages and because of the child that they have conceived. If the participants in a marriage do not love each other and they plan to marry because of convenience that is another story and this should not be allowed. However, if two men love each other and if the feelings are genuine then why should they not marry? Another reason stated is the effect on the child raised by lesbian and gay couples.
According to Bidstrup (2007), he had stated in his article that there have been evidences that the children raised by same sex are normal the same as with the children raised by a straight couple. The reason of saying that gay relationships is immoral may have been another reason for the opposition. The Bible may have taught that being gay is immoral. However, not all religions see the gay as immoral. Everyone has a right to choose what religion they want to belong to and if a particular person belongs in another sect, gay relationships may not be deemed as immoral.
Among the gay press's responses to my 1993 book A Place at the Table was the charge by some critics that I'm 'sex-negative.' Frank Browning griped that I want to 'to have everyone put on 30 pounds, buy a Brooks Brothers suit, and wander off on the golf links, becoming [an] upper-class version of Ozzie and Harry. Those who don't want to take risks should join Mr. Bawer on the golf course. Those who ...
The reason of marriage as a procreation means is another reason for the opposition. However, there are people who do not have the capacity to bear a child and still get married. An example of which are the old couples who marry. If a particular person reached their 50s, especially the woman, it is impossible to have a child and yet they still got married. Looking at the different views regarding gay marriage, the author of this paper thinks that allowing gay marriage or same sex marriage may not harm society. In effect, it just gives the homosexuals the right to love and be happy.
Allowing the same sex marriage is not only beneficial to the gay people but it only shows that the justice system and society had begun to accept gays or lesbians in society. By not allowing the marriage only shows that there is still discrimination between the gays, and lesbians. America is a democratic country and it is only right to for the country to accept same sex marriage.
