Sitting in this room, it’s cold; and there’s nothing you can do. Shivering, and wondering “Why am I here today? ” The clock going “Tick Tock” “Tick Tock”; time is just the passing by. The doctor comes in with unexpected news, and his expression painted upon his face didn’t look too good. There are so many things running through your head, and just when you thought everything was going as expected,—– this happens. You are still seated, and you are in complete bewilderment, who would’ve thought a six letter word could be so deadly! Every saturday, each patient come as one at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
The children have their own identities that make them unique, and sharing their similarities bringing them closer together as a whole. On the outside, it’s just an dull building with red letters on it, but on the inside there are so many distinctive personalities, joyous smiles, and what about the passionate workers, you can’t forget them. The smiles beam upon these children’s faces; new patients, old patients they are all there for the same thing. Walking in as an inexperienced person, I realized that everyone has a story, and sometimes people can’t help the circumstances they are in.
The six letter word intrigues me the most——- CANCER that is. Cancer is a sensitive topic to me, because it is as fatal as poison. Any type of Cancer can kill you basically, and it’s very common to get cancer, because it’s not realized until it hits you, when you visit the doctor’s office. Cancer is not only lethal now in modern day, it has been present for a while now. I look at all the diseases that are starting to become more common in today, and Cancer is the worst one out of all of them. There are a plethora of different types of cancer; whether it’s Breast Cancer, Lung cancer, or even Brain Cancer.

It’s the cells of the body that accumulate, and turn into Cancer. Anyone can have Cancer, and that is why it’s very important to make sure the signs and symptoms are checked, not only at home, but also when visiting a doctor. I feel as if I take a look of what a typical Cancer patient goes through in life, I can start to take my body and eating diet to a whole new level of seriousness, because I don’t want to be a victim of Cancer. The only Cancer I am familiar with has to be Breast Cancer, because I’ve had friends and teachers that have been diagnosed with this type of Cancer.
Every man and female should check their breast to feel any lump. Personally, I don’t think guys should be checking breast take the time out to check their breast for lumps. Personally, I think men observing their breast is really out of the ordinary, because it’s unusual for a man to have breast. Cancer isn’t one of those diseases that came from the foreign countries. Cancer happens because of the DNA and cells. When I went to go visit the hospital, the children fascinated me the most, because they are normal people with a sickness.
I was able to sit in a circular formation with them, and have a couple of conversations with them. It was interesting, because of the fact they each had a story. If I could have the opportunity, I would go to the hospital every single day, because I am always willing to meet new people who is outside of my comfort zone. Unfortunately, I can’t, because I live in Clarksville and I’m not gonna keep driving an hour away every single day. Driving would not be a problem if I went every other weekend, because that way I wouldn’t miss school.
Another problem that would be faced would be, some parents don’t feel comfortable with people talking to their children. If there was a lot of communication going on, I would have a variety of insight about what these children have to go through on a day to day, night to night basis. There is a profusion of people I can interview that would help myself and others comprehend the dangers and lifestyle of Cancer. Spending time with these children, have made me realize that there is more to life than the cell phone. Some people are unfortunate enough to even have a cellphone.

I found myself turning something negative into positive, because I have come to learn that you shouldn’t discriminate against those who maybe sick or may have some type of disability. I want to talk more with the nurses of the hospital to see how they deal with these patients. I could learn what they have to do to make sure these kids stay alive, and I would like to take the responsibility to talk with the manager to see why he even wanted to get into this business of dealing with people who are sickly. At the visit, this was the first time I actually met with a lot of people under my age.
In the beginning, I was really nervous, because I didn’t know what to expect out of any of this. The nurse, Tami, was benevolent enough to sit there with me, and help me engage with everyone. I realized that I wasn’t the only person who has come to do some research; and I wasn’t the last. The green carpet was full of kids. They are all in the same age group, and mostly girls. I was delighted that there were so many girls asking me questions. There were big white machines hooked upon some of them;they were as bald as the sun. Considering the fact
that most of them were caucasian, their bodies seemed very dull and ghastly. All of the girls looked as if they just got home from a long day of school. Even though I don’t normally take the timeout to acknowledge people, dealing with these group of kids will help me not only have a better outlook on life, but also fix how I am with other people. The kids may have different properties, but they are all the same, and I would like to spend more time with not only the patients I have already met, but with new people who come to that hospital.
Any sickness can give us a different expectation on life, and anytime we get some form of news like we have been diagnosed with something, it blows up in our face. We don’t really start looking about the future till we get news like that. People don’t really know what they had till it’s gone, because tomorrow is not promised. Be a leader. Be a fighter. You weren’t given these challenges if people didn’t believe you can overcome them
