There are always strange ironic moments in people’s lives where something completely unexpected happens. Although, when something unexpected happens it can result to something interesting. Interesting has many definitions, but it usually means to get the attention of something. There are many ways to make a story interesting. One way is irony, the opposite of what is expected. There are three types of irony: situational irony, verbal irony and dramatic irony. situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected happens. Verbal irony is when what is said is the opposite of what is meant. dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that a character in the text does not know. Many stories use irony to make them more interesting such as “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote, “The Lady, or the Tiger?” by Frank R. Stockton, “The Interlopers” by Saki, “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty. “A Christmas Memory” is a story about a boy called by the name of Buddy and his friend working to make a perfect Christmas. “The Lady, or the Tiger?” is about a princess’s lover being accused of loving the king’s daughter, and the princess’s lover must chose between two doors that contain either a lady who he shall marry or a tiger that will kill him. “The Interlopers” is a story about two men named Ulrich and Georg who hate each other, but they end up being friends in the end. “Thank You, M’am is about a boy named Roger attempting to steal a woman’s pocketbook, but instead she took him back to her apartment to make him dinner. “The Sniper” is about a Republican sniper killing an enemy sniper who happens to be his brother. Irony can make a story really interesting, but sometimes certain irony does not. Situational irony is the most effective at creating interesting stories.
The Essay on The Necklace The Development Of Irony
by Kimberly Ednie Mrs. Connolly ENC 1102 M-W-F 9:00AM Short Story Essay January 29, 1997 Guy de Maupassant's 'The Necklace' is situational irony written in 1884. The story was written in a time when there were very distinct social classes primarily determined by one's birth. It is about a woman who can not come to terms with her position in the middle class. Although she knows she can not escape ...
Situational irony makes a story interesting because people can relate to the ironic predicaments. In the story “A Christmas Memory” Buddy and his friend meet Mr. Haha Jones who seems like a big scary person judging by his looks. “[H]e glowers at us through Satan-tilted eyes and demands to know: ‘What you want with Haha?’ . . . ‘Well,’ my friend remarks on our way home, ‘ there’s a lovely man’” (Daniel 55).
Buddy and his friend expect to find a big, tough man, but it turns out that Mr. Haha was nice. People can relate to this because anyone can be judged by their appearances. Another example is in the story “The Lady, or the Tiger?” when the king thinks that he knew everything that was going on in his kingdom, but he did not know about his daughter’s lover for months. “This love affair moved on happily for many months, until one day the king happened to discover its existence” (Daniel 301).
The king is supposed to be all knowing but he does not even know what is going on between his daughter and her lover. This can relate to people because, just like the king, parents do not know much about what is happening with their own children. In the story “The Interlopers” Ulrich offers Georg wine even though they are enemies. “‘There is good wine in it, and one may as well be as comfortable as one can. Let us drink, even if tonight one of us dies’” (Daniel 153).
A person would expect that they would still be sworn to hate each other, but ironically Ulrich gives his flask to Georg. People can relate to this because sometimes when two people do not get along they do not have to always despise each other. When the reader can relate to the story, he or she can think of it as interesting because the events can happen in real life.
The Essay on Story Irony Kill Suspense
Lather and Nothing Else seems to fit Hernando Tellers story well. Its self- explanatory to the plot of the story and essentially gives away the decision of our disgruntle protagonist. But what if someone looks at the story in a different perspective Perhaps if the point of view was changed Try to read the story from the sight of an innocent bystander or the view of the captain in the barbers ...
Situational irony can make a big surprising or exciting change in the story. In the story “The Gift of the Magi” Della and Jim both get each other gifts that they can not use because they gave away their most prized possessions that were supposed to go with those gifts. “‘I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs”’ (Daniel 292).
People would not expect Della and Jim to both do the same thing so it surprises them with a hilarious and ironic ending. In the story “Thank You, M’am” after Roger tries to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’s pocketbook, she takes him back to her apartment to give him food instead of calling the police or punishing the boy. “‘Then we’ll eat,’ said the woman. “I believe you’re hungry—or been hungry—to try to snatch my pocketbook”’ (Daniel 89).
The story takes a complete turn and surprises the reader through situational irony. Another example of how situational irony can make a surprising change is in the story “The Sniper.” The sniper kills an enemy sniper on the opposite building who turns out to be his brother. “[T]he sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face” (Daniel 215).
The reader would not expect the enemy sniper to be the sniper’s brother. This ironic situation makes a remarkable twist in the story. A story is always interesting when there are surprises from situational irony that enthuses the reader to keep reading.
Dramatic irony and verbal irony are not as effective at creating interesting stories as situational irony. An example of dramatic irony not creating an interesting story is in “The Gift of the Magi.” The reader knows what Della’s gift to Jim is, but Jim does not know. “Jim had not seen his beautiful present” (Daniel 292).
This does not make the story interesting because the reader knowing about the gift does not change the story in any way. Another example is in “Dog Star” when Laika does not know about the narrator leaving her for the moon. “There was only one flaw; I knew, though Laika could not, how soon it must end” (Daniel 36).
This example of dramatic irony does not make the story interesting because Laika is a dog, and having a clueless dog does not change the story or make it better at all. An example of verbal irony is in “The Lady, or the Tiger?” when it is said that the king’s trial is fair even though it is not. “This vast amphitheater . . . was an agent of poetic justice, in which crime was punished, or virtue rewarded, by the decrees of an impartial and incorruptible chance” (Daniel 299).
The Essay on Makes This Surprising Is The Fact Phebe Rosalind Viola
The very first thing that surprised me in Shakespeare was the fact that I came across an unfamiliar in Romeo and Juliet. This surprised me since I had read it so many times. The part that caught my eye was the fact that I never stopped to think about why Romeo kills Tybalt. It has always seemed to be that Romeo was revenging Mercutio to me, but this play I didn't notice evidence to that. It seemed ...
This does not make an interesting story because it is just a small quote of sarcasm that does not change the story at all. Dramatic irony and verbal irony do not make any twists or exciting changes in the story to make it interesting.
Irony is everywhere in life, creating strange moments for people and also making life interesting. If the world was dull and had no surprising ironic situations, then every person’s life would be boring. Situational irony specifically creates those hilarious ironic situations. Irony is important to this world because these surprising ironic moments can make anyone laugh. Laughter and humor can help keep peoples’ bodies strong by exercising the muscles in their bodies while humor also relieves stress. Overall, irony can cause a person to be healthy and to live longer.
