There are many reasons why after 1956 War broke out between Israel and neighboring countries. This was a combination of Egypt and Syria becoming more aggressive towards Israel, water disputes and intensifying terrorist attacks. The United Nations played a modest role at the time of the Six Day War. This contribution consisted of, pre war, being ordered out of Egypt and post war, passing a resolution which was ignored. After 1959, Egypt’s leader – Colonel Games Nassar, was on good terms with the Soviet Union. With gained military and technical assistance, Egypt became equipped militarily to deal with Israel.
Syria was also developing, with the ‘Baath Party’ -an anti-Semitic political party, coming to power in 1961; advocating a radical and aggressive approach towards Israel. The Baath Party showed this by not ending the ‘El Fatah’, terrorist attacks on Israel from within their border. Attacks on Israel after 1956 by ‘El Fatah’ -a Palestinian terrorist group, were a factor in causing disagreements with Jordan over water rights. Israel was also a factor in the dispute, throughout the 1960’s Israel had been diverting water from the Jordan River to irrigate agricultural land in the Negev Desert, this and the terrorist attacks led to further relation breakdowns. Arab terrorism improved in effectiveness during 1964, growing under the wing of the PLO -Palestinian Liberation Organization and it was considered by some Israeli politicians that Israel, struggling economically after the ’56 war, should go to war as a solution to their economic problems. On the 16 th May 1967, Colonel Nassar requested the withdrawal of UNEF -United Nations Emergency Force troops from the Sinai Peninsula.

United Nations Secretary General U Thant quickly complied with this request; Secretary General Thant claimed that UNEF had no legal right to remain if Egypt did not want them to. Therefore the UN did not act to restrain Egypt in the war, as many thought it should have. Immediately after the war, the UN organized a cease fire, sponsored jointly by the United States and the United Soviet Socialist Republic. Six months later, United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 242, which stated that all parties involved will recognize each other and their rights to live without threats and guaranteed freedom of international water ways -Gulf of Aqua, Suez Canal and Straits of Tiran. Also settlements of refugee problems would be sought involving Palestinians who became state-less after the 1948-49 War of Independence and the just ended, Six Day war. This document was ignored.
Thus, reasons for the Six Day War were drawn from problems within Egypt, Syria, Israel and Palestinian terrorism. The UN’s small role at the time of the Six Day War consisted of leaving Egypt and passing a resolution which was ignored, providing no new development on the Palestine-Israel situation.
