Tobacco should remain legalized. Tobacco sales provide a huge boost to the economy, banning Tobacco would boost crime rates and tobacco is already ingrained in society. The first truth about tobacco is that taxes from tobacco provide a huge income to Canada. Last year alone Canada generated well over a whopping 7 billion dollars (Tax Revenues from Tobacco Sales).
I’m sure we are all aware of Canada’s billions of dollars of debt and how it continues to grow larger and larger each year.
If we were to ban tobacco in Canada would only be digger a bigger hole in terms of debt, and be forced to cut funding to other public facilities. One might argue, is costing too much money in healthcare? Simply no, in 2002 Canada was estimated to only spend 4. 4 billion dollars on tobacco in healthcare costs leaving the rest of the tobacco revenue to fund progressive public facilities such as schools, library’s, and anti-smoking campaigns to keep the children safe(Economic Costs).
Would we really want to cut more funding to schools and libraries?
I have an Uncle who is a well upstanding, virtuous officer who fights drugs on a daily basis. You might think an officer like he would be all for banning drugs, but that would be incorrect. My Uncle says “Banning marijuana and tobacco is and would be a waste of time and money”. He has a point doesn’t he? Police resources are already being strained and diminished on the failing war on drugs, adding tobacco would only make things worse. In fact banning tobacco would only increase the violent crime rate when the black market takes control over tobacco.
The Essay on Tobacco Ban
A complete ban on tobacco advertising - healthy or just not economical? Pro: less smokers, clean environment, death toll decline Con: less tax revenues, government loses votes, Recently there have been a lot of talks and discussions about the controversial topic of banning tobacco advertising. Concerning the fact that more and more people die because of smoking, we should rethink this issue and ...
I’m sure we are all aware of the 1920’s prohibition of alcohol, well when alcohol was banned homicide rates increased 78% (Prohibition Crime Rate).
I’m sure the first question is why? Well it’s pretty basic a large government can easily control and safely distribute a substance. A gang on the other hand has to fight with weapons to gain control. Is this what we want? We want more violent crime? Once again quoting from my Uncle, “I’ve seen the brutality of drug wars, everybody loses and it would be a shame to ban a drug that isn’t even dangerous to bystanders. To clarify his point, some drugs make people go crazy and hurt others. Tobacco doesn’t, it only hurts the user, and thanks to no smoke-free zones second hand smoke is almost non-existent. I think tobacco users and regular civilians can deal with smoke better someone trying to kill them. The last consequence you must be cognisant if you ban tobacco is what the population thinks. 1 in 5 Americans smoke regularly (1 in 5 American Adults Still Smoke, CDC Report Shows ).
While 40% of Americans disagree with banning cigarettes (Majority of Americans Support Public Smoking Bans, Says Survey).
Keeping in mind this is only cigarettes and not tobacco you can see a huge amount of Americans smoke, and do not want smoking banned. However, if the ban did succeed you would only make half the population mad. Someone might say, “Were banning tobacco because it’s bad for you! ” I would answer why not ban fatty foods, cars, sugar, basically anything bad for you. What makes cigarettes any different from smoke from factories polluting the air? At least we have many smoke free zones; I don’t even remember the last time I was stuck inside with a smoker.
Whenever I think about a tobacco ban I think about my cousin, he loves cigarettes and never wants to quit. If there were to be a ban he would be forced to go into dangerous areas to buy cigarettes. I think I can speak for many people when I say what my cousin, other smokers, and people do in their own home is their own business as long as it isn’t dangerous or affecting others. As you can see banning tobacco would cause a great abundance of problems, we would go further into debt, our crime would go up, and we would upset a great deal of people.
The Essay on Atrocity And The American People
An atrocity is defined as "An act of cruelty and violence inflicted by an enemy-armed force upon civilians or prisoners." Some believe this war in Kosovo is about politics. However, upon examination of the specifics of this conflict it is apparent that this is about religion. People must then decide whom, if anyone is committing these atrocities. Should the United States be involved in the ...
