Social and Scientific Progress It goes without saying that development of science has played an important role in our perception of the reality. But there is a question: how does the progress influences the world around us? Does it changes the situation for better or worsens it? There is always some contradiction between ethics and science or responsibility of scientists. Rappaccini’s Daughter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is one of the most complex and difficult short stories. Nathaniel Hawthorne revealed two main questions in the work: the price for scientific progress and isolation (social point).
The author showed that the root of all evil was not only in Rappaccini’s intellectual pride but in his isolation. The author emphasized that a true human should includ intellectual freedom, passion and tenderness. Professor Rappuccini made his daughter poisonous to protect her from the evils of the world. But he understood that she needed a companion.
He poisoned Giovanni to give her a companion in this twisted world that she had to live in. Rappuccini definitely cares more for science than for mankind . Hawthorne described the dehumanized scientist who neglects the heart in favor of the head. Rappuccini cut himself off from the chain of humanity. His garden is is terrible and unnatural. Beatrice is the daughter of his pride and not of his heart. Unfortunately, power, pride, jealously and revenge prove to be the ultimate poisons of the heart. Hawthorne shows in the story that the inner world of human experience is a complex and ambiguous mixture of good and evil.
The Research paper on Measures of Progress of Science in India
SCIENCE, VOL. 86, NO. 9, 10 MAY 2004 1195 in physics had received low citations, between 0 and 7 per paper. These facts only seek to highlight the point that citations to a paper do not depend upon journal IF, although journal IF does depend upon citations. Certainly, journal IF cannot be taken as the only indicator for measuring the quality of a research paper. It is more so because acts of ...
The evil takes shape in Rappaccini’s intellectual pride and Baglioni’s gross materialism. In “Rappaccini’s Daughter” Hawthorne says, “Her father was not restrained by natural affection from offering up his child in this horrible manner as the victim of his insane zeal for science.” Beatrice Rappaccini cries, “My father, wherefore didst though inflict this miserable doom upon thy child?” For a period of many millennia mans inquisitive mind strove to penetrate into the depth of the Universe and examine the secrets of humans body and mind. This expresses mans unquenchable thirst for knowledge; his strive to understand his role in the world. Man always tries to penetrate directly into a new sphere, which involves frequently unpredictable discoveries. But could they peep into a mans soul, get to know his inner thoughts and wishes. May be, no. Because each person has two beginnings: his body and his soul.
And soul belongs to God. He has the only power to manage it..
