Dubai enjoys an arid subtropical climate, with blue skies and sunshine all year round. The hottest months are between June and September whereas the coolest time is between December and March. There is very little rainfall in Dubai, but when showers do fall it is mainly in the cooler months.
Dubai, with an area of 3,885 square kilometers, is the second largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Situated on the banks of the Dubai Creek, a natural inlet from the Gulf which divides the city into the Deira district to its north and Bur Dubai on its south; the city ranks as the UAE’s most important port and commercial center.
The UAE has 700 kilometers of coastline, of which 100 kilometers are on the Gulf of Oman. Along the Arabian Gulf coast there are offshore islands, coral reefs and sabkha, or salt-marshes. Stretches of gravel, plain and barren desert characterise the inland region.
To the east, a range of mountains lies close to the Gulf of Oman and forms a backbone through the Mussandam Peninsula. The western interior of the country, most of it in Abu Dhabi, consists mainly of desert interspersed with oasis. (dubai.ae, 2013)

The new strategy aims to establish the UAE as a world leader in green economy and a center for export and re-export of products and green technologies. It also aims to maintain a sustainable environment to support long-term economic growth.
The initiative includes a wide range of programmes and policies in the areas of energy, agriculture, investment and sustainable transport in addition to environmental and constructional policies to raise the quality of life in the UAE.
In this context, Sheikh Mohammed stressed that the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, seeks to be a global hub and a successful model of the green economy so as to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of development being experienced by the country, and to preserve the environment for future generations.
Sheikh Mohammed added: “Our goal is clear from this national initiative that is to build the economy that maintains the environment, as well as an environment that supports the growth of the UAE economy. In line with the vision 2021, the UAE seeks to diversify an economy that is based on knowledge and innovation and through which we can provide employment opportunities for our citizens, maintain our natural and environmental resources, and strengthen our competitive position in global markets, especially in the areas of renewable energy, and green economy- related products and technologies”.
Sheikh Mohammed went on to say: “We are serious in developing our development process to reach leading positions globally, and over the nine coming years up to the year 2021 we will launch a range of initiatives and projects in all areas to achieve our goal, and I ask everyone to prepare for a new phase in the growth of the UAE,” adding: “We liked to launch this national initiative to coincide with the World Future Energy Summit held in Abu Dhabi and attended by 26 thousand people and delegations from 140 countries to reaffirm our commitment to the world that we seek hard to diversify energy sources and preserve the environment so as to be a model for all countries that seek to achieve the same goal”.

The Green Economy Initiative includes six major tracks covering a wide range of legislation, policies, programmes and projects. The first track aims to promote renewable energy, clean fuels and energy efficiency usage. The second track intends to encourage investments in green economy and green technologies and to create job opportunities for UAE citizens. The third track, concerning the green city, includes urban planning, sustainable transportation, and clean air initiatives; while the fourth, dealing with climate change, aims to reduce carbon emissions, encourage organic agriculture and preserve biodiversity. Green Buildings
In implementation of a decision issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and as part of Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 for applying the specifications of green buildings to all the buildings and premises in Dubai with the aim of keeping Dubai a healthy city with a clean and pollution free environment, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in co-operation with Dubai Municipality, has launched the Green Building Regulations & Specifications, a set of specifications and guidelines for regulating the criteria of the structure that allows adequacy in the consumption of electricity, water and renewed energy as part of the green buildings project in Dubai, which will make savings of around AED10 billion until 2030.

In 2009, Dubai Chamber achieved the coveted LEED certification for Existing Buildings, while the Drainage and Irrigation Department of Dubai Municipality has a grey water treatment plant for use in irrigating local parks and trees.
In December 2011, the Supreme Council of Energy in Dubai allocated AED12 billion for producing electricity from the solar energy. Abu Dhabi aims also to produce 7 per cent of its energy by 2020 through the project of MasdarCity, which will be the first emission-free city in the world. Masdar began to annually host the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi in 2008 and was selected to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Abu Dhabi has created Zayed Future Energy Prize in appreciation of the first environment supporter, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It also created another prize through the Zayed International Prize for the Environment, which is aimed at supporting and encouraging environmental activities and the distinguished national individual and collective initiatives contributing to sustainable development.
