The personal and social tensions between characters have explored through two Australian contemporary plays. They are <Ruby Moon> by Matt Cameron was written in 2005 and <Stolen> by Jane Harrison was written in 2003. <Ruby Moon> is used the allusion of the fairy tale story, where Ruby went to visit her grandmother and got missing. Her parents play detective roles of trying to find the solution. Contrastingly, <Stolen> depicted the Australian history of the ‘Stolen Generation’. <Ruby Moon> explores the theme of the fairy-tale. In our class work shop, my group has picked the prologue to perform. We used the Ice-cream truck, the Mannequin, the Doll, the Dress to establish the scene. The contrast and Symbolism are used to place an emphasis on innocence versus, truth and reality to makes the audience question what happen to Ruby. It also creates personal concern on the society. As an audience we start to questioning- what happen to our society? Does it is dangerous? What can we do? We have to be careful with our children? The effect of using the techniques had created a fear and terrify mood for audience and as an audience as we get a message of the world is danger.

<Stolen> explores the theme of loss of innocence. In our class experience, my group played the scene where <Sandy revisits children’s home>. We uses contrast between the old orphans building vs. the modern apartment; continually we use the ironic of bar keep the Riff Raff out to lock the children, now the Riff Raff is in; finality we uses the voice over to create visual imagery. As a result of using the techniques to highlights that the society has moved on but Sandy hasn’t been able to let go as easily. As an audience, we feel sorry for Sandy and worry (personal) the changing of the society.
<Ruby Moon> explores the theme of adultery. In class work shop, four students play the role of Neighbours- Dulcie, Dawn, Sid, Professor and Veronica. They used the contrast to create the confusion between Ray, Seductive Veronica and Sylvie dialogue. It also used the transformational acting, where two actors play all the roles. As a consequence, it makes the audience questioning- who is real? Who do we trust? Is our world just one big game or fairy tale? What is our purpose? Is it to have children in life? Do our children live in the safety society or world? What can we do?
<Stolen > explores the theme of adaptation. In our class work shop, six students have performed the scene where Anne’s internal struggle between black and white. They used monologue to show the comedy of ‘Milk chocolate is represented white and dark chocolate represent black’. Anne as a character, who plays a teenagers view of tan or not tan. The Audience see a teenager’s view of someone who was adopted into a ‘white family’ directly says to the audience ‘white fellas’ and ‘black fella’. Ultimately it’s Anne’s story and her choice. As an effect, it creates humorous and the excitement of knowing Anne’s choice. It also reflects that the society has to take action and as an audience we feel concern for the stolen child.

<Ruby Moon> explores parent’s grief. In our class work shop we all took turns in performing this scene <epilogue and the ambiguous ending>. It uses symbolic and crazy of Sylvie swallows a pill and Ray reads the story from the worn leather book. It has created depress and confuse mood and for audience to watch. As audiences we feel sympathise with Sylvie and understand Sylvie’s craziness of losing child. The effects of using this technique creates an uneasy feeling which reflects how the parents are feeling. It highlights the issue of our society is dangerous. As a human we have to do something to improve it, because it is unsafe for our child living in this danger society.
<Stolen> explores the mistreatment of children of the stolen generation. In our class work shop, we all took turns in performing this scene <unspoken Abuse>. It began with the childhood scene of children clapping and singing. The contrast is using to compare the innocence V.s loses innocence. It creates depressing mood for audience seeing what happen to Ruby. The contrast of childhood rhyming songs and singing with a sad little girl and the sharp silence at the end presents the seriousness of the issue of childhood abuse and a little girl’s innocence being taken away.
