The universal frame of creation began from a harmonious music, a heavenly one. When Nature was beneath a pile of atoms, with very harsh sound, and could not raise its head because of the burden, the tuneful voice of heavenly music was heard from the sky that said: “Arise, more than dead!” Then coldness and heat, moisture and draught went to their right place and obeyed Music’s power this way. This universal frame began from harmony of nature to the harmony of music and it ran through all the notes of music and finished the diapason in Mankind. Thus man was created out of harmony and was the closing tune of creation diapason.

When Jubal sounded the chorded shell, his brothers that heard the music gathered around and fell on the ground to worship that heavenly music. They thought that nothing less than a god could live in that shell (because the sound was so magnificent) that spoke so sweetly and so well. This poem is mainly dealing with harmony, its greatness and importance in the universe and its being the essence of creation, Nature:

We can see the emphasis that the poet is putting on music- harmony. The poem wants to tell us how everything has been started by a heavenly harmony ( to me the ‘rules’ of nature) and how this harmony is still the major influence on the earth; how the mankind is the last, closing, part of nature and how he is united with it. Thus this harmony can affect every human passion in dramatic ways.
The poem ends with an exaggeration about music’s power: Cecilia, being the symbol of a musician artist, plays her organ and misleads an angel, heading to heaven, to the earth. This, in my opinion, shows the relationship between heaven and earthly rules, and that such harmony is not only effective on trees, beast, and mankind but also on angels.
