The paper will examine a specific population of clients who have special needs; the population that will be examined is the homeless.
A personal perspective on how I, as an advocate, can assist with problems this client group has such as: food, clothing, shelter, job training, and transportation needs will be included. Specific Population: Homeless “The most proximate cause of homelessness in America is poverty” (University of Richmond, 2003).
Today there are between five and six hundred thousand people considered to be homeless in the United States; to be homeless means that a person does not have a permanent place to live.
Along with the problems of homelessness come poor nutrition, unemployment, illnesses, drug addictions, and violence. Homelessness is rising higher each year and experts have realized that new programs and aid must be given to these people; not only to maintain the current population of homeless but also to prevent the population from growing. Assisting the Client “Advocacy refers to influencing decisions that affect the welfare or interests of another individual or group” (Barsky, 2000, pg. 219).

As an advocate for the homeless it would be important for me to empower the client to change their situation for their own benefit. Advocating for the homeless could involve tasks such as: helping the client set goals, educating them about available resources, helping them locate resources, and working to change policies that limit their abilities. The person must desire a lifestyle change which could include education training, job training, or rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol. By identifying the core reason for the homeless situation an advocate can better assist a client with the proper resources and information. Conclusion This paper has briefly described the problems homeless people face and the role an advocate has in helping them change their situation. An advocate is very important for people who live in special circumstances and cannot otherwise accomplish goals or receive proper treatment from organizations and or people.
Many populations have special needs that prevent them from creating a normal lifestyle that most Americans enjoy. While everyone’s idea of normal may vary, the definition used here is: to be able to sustain life without assistances from some outside entity such as the government or nonprofit organization. Homeless people are at a greater disadvantage than others because they have no shelter and not enough money to make any changes in their life. Without money, a job, and transportation a homeless person cannot achieve their goals; this is why advocating for the homeless is necessary.
