What Motivated Me
Pressure? Yeah I know what that is, I have felt that ever since I started my first day of school. Being the oldest sibling and cousin, my family has always watched every move I make. It has been difficult being the oldest one and everyone was tough on me because I am the one that will be the first in the family to actually attend college. I have a chance! Every time I knew my report card was going to come in the mail, I’d race back home as soon as I heard that bell ring, I ran like the wind as my brother always would tell me. I was a nervous wreck when I tore that envelope open and knew my grades were in there. My family had high expectations for me especially anything involving school. For me, I always had/have to receive all A’s, which was a big difference from my siblings. If my brother were to get all B’s he would get rewarded with whatever he wanted. I never enjoyed school because the pressure made me dislike learning and I felt like I was forcing myself to learn instead of actually enjoying it.
I remember long ago when I was in the fifth grade; I went to school at Miramonte Elementary in El Monte, California. I remember this like it was just yesterday, my friends Liannu, Annette and I were at the playground sitting on the benches just like all the other students. That sounds strange right? That day you couldn’t hear the squeaky noise of those rusted swings, or see kids chasing others around playing tag, or anyone on the jungle gym. So why was this a weird scene? It was because of the spelling bee! This was our first annual spelling bee and was a huge deal to the whole school, but only the 5th graders were able to participate. The first place winner gets the biggest trophy, a medal, a pizza party for their class, and got to have lunch with the principal. Yes, I said lunch with the principal, how excited everyone was. I however was the outcast because almost every single 5th grader competed, but I did not want to participate. I would be expected to win first anyways and if I didn’t that would just be embarrassing. Everyone else has been studying for about 2-3 weeks, what chance do I have?

“Anza come on why won’t you do it, just participate it will be fun, “ Liannu said. Liannu was one of my best friends, 4 feet 10 inches with a smile that will light you up; she had short hair with small glasses and always with a clean uniform on that smelled like a spring’s day, refreshing and sweet. I said to her, “why it’s dumb and such a waste of time,” she looks down at me and says, “don’t you wanna have lunch with the principal?” I chuckled and told her, “fine I’ll do it as long as you would stop bugging me, I guess it will be fun.” Ring! Ring! Ring! Ring! I looked at all the students around me who were chewing on their nails and breaking a sweat cramming that last minute of studying in before we all compete. We all formed a perfect line, so Ms. Freedman, the teacher who was holding the spelling bee came to get us fifth graders. We all followed her into the cafeteria, we all lined up one by one next to each other and once the first row was filled up she told us to form rows behind the front until it all filled up.
“Children! Quiet down now, Juan will you please lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance before we start the spelling bee,” Ms. Freedman said. Juan steps up and says, “Put your right hand over your heart, ready begin.” After we recited the Pledge of Allegiance she started calling out names in order by her list and gave us a word to spell. This was timed. After a while, it was down to three, Liannu, Juan and me. Juan had gotten out after the third or fourth word, then it was just me and my best friend left in this competition. We both had spelled about 30 words correctly until one! All you need is one, her word was “quick-witted.” Oh I know this word! This was the word Liannu was having trouble with and I had tested her on it at the playground several times. I could tell she was nervous, she was grasping her wrist together and looking around and nervously biting down on her lip. I on the other hand felt relaxed and ready to go because I had nothing to lose and I did not study and still came this far. “Liannu?! Liannu?! Time is almost up, spell the word quick-witted,” Ms. Freedman demanded. “Okay quick-witted, q u i c k w i t t e d, quick witted,” Liannu pronounced. Ms. Freedman had looked down at her paper with all the words and looked at Liannu and said, “I am sorry, but unfortunately that is incorrect, now Anza if you can spell this word correctly, you will be our first place winner in our first annual spelling bee.” I had smirked because I know this word, “alright Ms. Freedman quick-witted, q u i c k hypen w i t t e d, quick-witted.” “And that is correct Anza, congratulations!” Ms. Freedman shouted. My heart shouted with joy, never have I been so happy. I did not feel pressure at all doing this because this was just for fun and I was in a state of relaxation.

So ever since that day, I have taken more of an interest in reading because I wanted to learn how to spell more words. This boosted my confidence with my writing. I had never enjoyed writing; I thought of it as a requirement. However, because my friend Liannu had pushed me into participating in that spelling bee, it made me a great speller and more interested in reading. I am not the greatest writer, but I love getting feedback by all the teachers I have because it helps me improve as a writer and I know writing will always be a part of my life no matter what I do.
