Most patients go through different healing processes such as Emotional and Spiritual healing process, these healing process are different and individual to each patient. Due to the uniqueness of each patient hospitals are facing challenges to treat their patients. Most hospitals are developing methods to overcome these challenges. One of the methods they are developing includes spiritual settings in each area of the hospital, and by providing Chaplin services throughout the day to the patient, family, and friends allowing practice of the individuals spiritual needs. This paper will discuss the healing hospital and spirituality, challenges of a healing environment, and how biblical passage Matthew 4:23-24 pertains to a healing hospital. The Healing Hospital
A successful hospital patient’s healing starts from the entrance. The hospital doors should be open to anyone who enters through them to be treated with respect, dignity, in regard to their race, culture, ethnic or religion choices. When the patient arrives at a hospital, they would hope to see clean and organized areas, welcoming reception, or a person who will comfort them and ask their needs. All these are very important factors, but all these factors do not make the hospital a healing hospital. According to an article titled the “Top Ten Healing Hospitals” having a well-qualified staff that creates comfortable and trustworthy relationships with their patients can make a big difference in the healing process of their patients (Chapman, 2009).

If a patient trusts their health care providers and believes they will get the best treatment, then their healing process will be faster. As the technology becomes more complicated and patients sickness’s becomes more complex, a hospital needs to have well educated health care staff, trained in the new and advanced technology’s to gain the patient’s trust. A healing hospital is a hospital that can provide support and service for patients who do not have a family or friends to support them.
A healing hospital recognizes the staff that goes above and beyond to care for the patients and awards staff with incentives to gain satisfaction and thrust of the organization they work for. In regard to patient spiritual needs a healing hospital needs to be prepared to receive every individual regardless of their choice of religion and beliefs. There are many organizations that can provide spirituality services to patients and their families. Having this service is very important to the patient who wants to practice their beliefs and will help them to become comfortable and connect to their internal soul. Patients who have a discussion with their health care providers regarding their spirituality and religion will be comfortable during their stay in the hospital. Patients and family find peace and a sense of wellbeing during difficult time, stress, sickness or death, if their spiritual needs are met. For example on of the “Top Ten Healing Hospital” Mercy Gillbert Medical Center mentioned the three factors that make a hospital a healing hospital;
1) Physically attractive environment, 2) culturally sensitive staff, 3) Staff trained to provide loving care (Geimer-Flanders, 2009).
Even if spirituality has a positive patient outcome, it remains neglected by many areas of hospital services. Most health care staff do not want to participate in spiritual care of their patients due to various reasons, such as lack of knowledge about the required religion, or it might be against their own religion or beliefs to treat the patient. A healing hospital should educate staff of the importance of respecting each patients religion and beliefs, have a guideline on how to treat those patients according to their religion or belief , let the patients and their family practice their religion during their stay in the hospital. For example, my place of work has a special prayer program every day for forty five minutes for anyone to attend. The hospital also has a healing garden with different plants that can attract butterflies and birds which can help the patient and family to meditate and restore their hope. Unlike other organizations, hospitals are dealing with patients’ lives every day, one of the worst challenges hospitals face is having unwanted events happen to the patient, for example patient developing surgical site infection after surgery will prolong a patients stay in the hospital, cost hospital a lot of money to treat the infection, and can cause patient to die. Other challenges to a healing environment include patients coming from various parts of the world, and patients with language barriers, even if most of hospitals are required to have translator services, there can be communication breakdowns between the patient and the health care providers, which creates patients not being treated according to their beliefs, which can lead to complications and patient dissatisfaction (Clegg, 2003).
Another challenge for the healing environment is patients refusing treatment due to their belief or spirituality, despite the treatment being important to the patient life, nurses should respect the patient’s wishes and try talk with the patients doctor, family, clergy, and most importantly to the patient, to help them make decisions consistent with their spiritual needs and beliefs.
