Students never quit in the class because Kemo wouldn’t let give up with out trying & would always tell them they needed the “ganas” to be able to do it. The students in Mr. Escalante’s where accused of cheating in the AP Calculus exam because they all had the exact grade & missed the same questions by making the same mistake. According to the Registry the film was “ one of the most popular of a new wave of narrative feature films produced in the 1980s by Latino filmmakers” & “celebrates in a direct, approachable, and impactful way, values of self-betterment through hard work and power through knowledge.” Not any student that wanted to learn AP Calculus could get in the class, Kemo had to approve them & had to get a sheet signed by their parents to be able to study in the class.
Deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress After Mr. Escalante’s first AP class passed the exam , year after year the number of students passing the exam kept increasing & in 1987 87 students passed the exam. New teacher Jaime Escalante was determined to change the system & achievments of the students at Garfield HS. Dealing with the accusations of cheating Kemo encouraged his students to retake th exam & prove them wrong.
Dealing with these problems Kemo think his car has been stolen, walks home & finds out that his student, Angel, to fix it up as a sign of appreciation. Escalante began teaching in Garfield HS in 1974 & taught his first AP Calculus class of 14 students in 1978. Later as Escalante is waiting for the results he is given the news that the computers he has been waiting for his computer class have arrived. It was based on the true story of Jaime Escalante & it was added to the National Film Registry!
