Star Wars
Star Wars is a great example of excellent sound quality in a movie. There are dozens of different sound effects that make this movie a classic. The most commonly overlooked piece of audio in a movie is the character’s voices. The voices in Star Wars play a large part of the movie. Each character has a distinct voice and a distinct way that they speak. Darth Vader has an extremely deep voice and speakes in long draw out words, to help show how evil he is. Han Solo has a rugged sounding voice and is very direct when he talks. Han is considered to be a tough guy who likes to be a loner, yet he has a sidekick. Luke Skywalker has a soft, young sounding voice to show how inexperienced he is. CP-30 is a robot who has human qualities and has a crackly voice that shows how nervous he is and how much of a wimp he is. Other aliens in the movie in the movie make weird noices that have to be translated at the bottom of the screen.
Another common sound effect used in the movie is lasers. Lasers are used in the fight scenes that take place with the space ships. The sound effects of the ships themselves are incredible and the sound when they get hit get hit by a laser really grabs the attention of the viewer. Other sound effects include the sound of the light sabers that Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader use. They make a vibrating sound, which is supposed to help its glowing visual effect. They also make a sound that is similar to the sound a bug zapper makes when a bug hits it. The light saber also makes a nosies when specific noise when it is swung and misses its target

The score to the movie is also very important. The entire score is instrumental. It is all orchestral music. The music helps to intensify certain sences with loud interludes and then can be very soft in other parts to create a calm environment. Overall this is movie has excellent sound quality.
Casino
There are many specific sound effects used in the movie Casino. There is the sound of a crowded room and people gambling in the casino. There are sounds of machines hitting the winning combination and people celebrating the money they just won. The dice hitting the table and rolling off the back wall of the table. Music also plays a large role in this movie. Popular songs ranging from the fifties till the late seventies help set different moods and help influence the audience’s reaction to the characters.
An example of how important sound is actually provided in the movie itself. The FBI is trying to record a conversation between the two main characters, but are unable to because the two characters are covering their mouths which makes it impossible for the FBI members to see what they are saying. Certain sounds are also used for the FBI phone taps and other means of recordings that thye use. There are special sound effects used when fights break out in the movie. There is a specific sound used when a fist hits someone’s face or a bat hitting someone’s body. Overall the sound quality of this movie is good.
Return of the Jedi
This movie is very similar in sound to it’s predecessor Star Wars. The voices in Return of the Jedi still play an important roll in the film. Han Solo now speaks in a less rough tone to show that he has a gentler side to him. He is also in love with the princess, so he is a bit more refined now. Luke Skywalker has deeper voice that shows how much he has matured and is more experienced in life and the ways of the force. CP-30 is still has a bit of a crackly voice but not as bad as in Star Wars. There are still aliens or creatures from different other planets that do not speak english and speak in noises not comprehendable to humans. There is a difference in the way the aliens sound. In Star Wars the aliens had deeper voices and were generally evil type characters. In Return of the Jedi the creatures are small and furry and have squeaky voices. They are also allies of the many characters. The music is still orchestral and helps intensify a scene when needed. The light sabers still make the same sound when they hit each other and when they miss an object, only now the colors are different. The space ships and laser beams still sound a like. This too is an excelent example of great sound technique and quality in a movie.

Raging Bull
When most people think about special effects and sound effects used in movies they usually think about movies like the one’s above, such as Star Wars and Return of the Jedi. I think that Raging Bull has a great amount of sound to it. The sound effects used in Raging Bull are simple but effective. The sound quality of the fight scenes is great. The viewer is able to hear the punches being landed and to hear the leather from the gloves hitting the body and the face. If the viewer listens closely they can hear the blood squirting out of the boxer’s eye or whatever part of the body is cut. The sound of the audience cheering in the background is important because it helps to set a certain feeling that the viewer should experience during that particular scene. The sound of water being poured over the fighter, the sound of him spitting into a bucket all help put the viewer right there at the actual event. The voice and language used by the main character in play a large role in the movie also. The character is a very tough boxer who does not have a good education, so he does not speak proper english. He also has an accent because he is from New York, which adds to the tough guy image he portrays. Other sound effects are used such as breaking glass when the main character flips over a table full of food and breakes all the dishes. These sound effects may be simple compared to a movie like Star Wars but they work well in this movie. They get the point across and still manage to make the movie every interesting.

Free Bird-The Movie
This is not a normal movie with actors. This movie consists of live recordings from a few different shows by the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. There are also some testamonials from band members about what it was like being in the band, the lead singer and what it was like when their plane crashed and some of the members died. Sound quality is the most important part of this movie. The entire movie is based on audio. The actual recording of a live performance is difficult. The sound engineer has to be able to get all the right audio levels to make the recording sound good. For example the drums should not be to high because the singer’s voice will not be heard, or the engineer needs to know how to fade out the other insruments a little when the guitar solo comes in. The sound quality of this movie is excellent. The testamonials of the band members was also done very well. The audience is able to hear the crack in the person’s voice and it helps add to the feeling of how sad they are when they are talking about lossing their best friend in a plane crash. Overall this is a fantastic job done on the sound quality of this movie. The audio of the concert recording is great and the recording of the testamonials really brings out the emotion in the person and makes the audience fell the way that they do.
