Statement of Learning Our high school (Hempstead, Long Island, New York) offers a new alternative educational program committed to improving the current situation and eliminating all the vices so usual for every high school: poor academic performance, poor behavioral adjustment, truancy, drop out etc. The level of GPA has fallen lately, the students attitude towards learning process has become more indifferent. Thus this new learning program was developed by a group of teachers and psychologists of our high school with the purpose to promote the involvement of every participating person into the learning process. The program is based on the statement that everybody is able to learn. According to The New Heritage Dictionary learning is defined as gaining “knowledge, comprehension, or mastery of through experience or study.” Thus we assume that every person is able to gain knowledge and study when having such an opportunity. We believe that we are given a curiosity about surrounding environment by nature searching for new experiences.
We are aware of the fact that the success of the program depends on the contribution of every person participating at every stage. Therefore teachers, students, parents are consulted at every stage of the program to enable a continuous learning process. Our goal To educate the whole person able to use his/her knowledge and experiences for making right decisions and executing these in the human world. The senior of the program should possess well-developed analytical, critical and scientific reasoning skills; have polished oral and written communicational abilities, clear understanding of his own values, an open-minded view of the world opened to foreign cultures. The programs values Students past experience Each student has his/her own previous experiences and constructs his/her learning process according with these ones. We take into consideration these experiences and improve the learning process accordingly. Activity We believe that active learning is the best way to become an educated person, thus we encourage the displays of the activity in class.
