The chamber of a loaded 9-millimeter berretta was pressed against my head on a sultry August night in Florida. There was only one thought of one person’s eyes that stopped me from taking the ultimate leap of faith. It lifted my soul. The thought was of my mother. Her warm shine that radiates from within, her bubbly charm, globular face, and rosy cheeks topped with hazel and almond shaped eyes are always readily available for me. Her comfort comes in many forms, and she is always ready to lend a comforting hug or simply listen.
Even strangers are not exempt to her warmth and bigheartedness. A worn and torn young man spoke at a local church meeting. I can only imagine the passion in my mom’s heart swelling as he spoke of his need for food and more importantly, his yearning for compassion. She gladly took him to the closest restaurant.
Olena was cordial, sensitive, and willing to listen to a man that most people would rather cast off as a waste of time. Something more impressive than this story is that she has never uttered a word to me about that poor man. Proving that charity for her is not a broadcasted spectacle for self-centered reasons, but rather a personal love for a suffering soul. I have never encountered anyone who cares so much about the well being of others, and I often proudly tell people that if she is on your side everything will be okay. When I heard the story of how one of her good friends became a life long companion, all I could think of was how characteristic the story was of my mom.

Charlene was walking down a road early on a cold December day. Her car broke down and she was in desperate need of getting out of the blistering cold and arriving to work. As the sun still rose, Olena pulled over on the side of the road. Initially, Charlene felt very wary about someone stopping so early in the morning; although, Olena, being very caring and concerned, persuaded her to get into the car. The ironic part of this story is that they have been close friends for over thirty years. Since that early morning encounter they have helped see each other through some very trying times.
I suppose this story portrays the old adage “there are no chance encounters.” My mom has seen me through more struggles and strife than most will ever have to endure. She saw doctors bring me back to life, with my eyes still breeding of hate as I left the hospital AMA (against medical advice).
I am not sure how I will ever show my gratitude; although, I am sure she will be happy if I display it through the same manner she does, through love of life and friendship. I believe in angels watching over us, and if they have angels in the flesh, I am willing to wager that she is mine.
So when times get tough and I feel like giving up, I always know that she will be there for me. When her time of passing comes along, I will not be afraid. I know she will be up in heaven still rooting for me.
