Over the last few years the number of illegal street races has skyrocketed. There are many reasons why but I say it was the release of a certain movie; The Fast and The Furious. Taking regular import cars and turning them into blazing fast street racers was the main topic in this movie. Many people believe that it is dangerous and should be illegal, as do the police. But why, it is a form of entertainment for some and a source of adrenaline for others. Should racing should not be illegal because, besides the negative effects, there are also positive effects.
The people that believe it should be illegal have many reasons to say so, because of all the negative effects of street racing. One negative effect, of course, is the possibility of the people racing may cause an accident. When the two line up at a light or on a side street or wherever they decide to go at it there is always the possibility that some other car may not see or realize what is going on and pull out in front of them. This would more than likely be the reason for most multi-car accidents due to street racing.
Another negative effect is when people bet on these races, because someone is going to lose and that person is going to be angry. There is no way of knowing if the loser is going to be so mad that be may beat, or even kill, someone. When someone races for pink slips they are putting up the title to there car and the winner gets the car. This is never a good idea because losing a car is something most people don’t take lightly increasing the possibility for trouble. There are many positive effects that come out of street racing as well though. One positive effect from street racing is the pride that someone takes in their car.
The Essay on Causes And Effects Of Racing
Racing, to me, is just the outward display of whose car is faster than the other guys. It is not a sport. It is not game. It is just immaturity on wheels. Now of course, many people will put a lot of work, money, and time into making their car faster than the next guys, but why? There is no product to show for all of your hard work but a glove-box full of speeding tickets, an engine that will need ...
If someone took their car from a normal everyday car and put the money, time, and effort into it and created an awesome machine then that person will be proud of his car and it will boost their confidence. Another positive effect is when someone receives the respect of others through racing. Picture this, two people, that don’t know each other, pull up next to each other and decide to go at it. They both take off and are head to head for about 5 seconds when one person pulls away and wins the race. When that race is over the two people pull in somewhere and introduce themselves and their cars.
Even though these two may never see each other again they both have a certain level of respect for one another. Street racing has had many positive and negative effects in my life. A positive effect is how many friends I have made through street racing. I have pulled up next to somebody and instigated a race; either won or lost, and then afterward made friends with some of them.
In fact four of my best friend I met on a street racing strip. I was at 39 th street, a major street racing strip that runs trough Warr Acres, and Bethany, and lined up next to a car with two guys in it and beat them because my car was a five speed and theirs was an automatic. I gained pride because I put a cold air intake in my car, and had a high performance catalytic converter and flowmaster exhaust installed as well. I also gained the respect and the friendship of the two in the car. It has had two major negative effects in my life though. One was when I decided to race my friends when it was a little wet outside.

We just got done eating and left the McDonalds parking lot and hit the stop light. We ended up taking off around a corner, I kept it under control but he slid a little sideways but corrected it and we kept going. As I got up around 90 mph this truck in front of me was breaking the law, going the speed limit, and I had to hit the breaks a little to hard and we drifted off the road into a police turn around and ended up pulling some Dukes of Hazard on the many curbs that were along the way. Well I broke all sorts of stuff underneath my car and ended up junking it. The other effect didn’t happen to me but it happened to my best friend I met from racing at 39 th. He had a 1978 special edition Trans Am that he and his dad had built the engine in it.
It was a five speed and had about 500 horsepower and around 400 ft lbs of torque. To say the least it was fast. Anyway his senior year, in 2002, he and two other guys went out for lunch the Friday before spring break to look for some races. They lined up next to a new Z 28 Camaro and they stayed together until my friend dropped it into 2 nd gear and pulled way away from him. He decided to lay it on the Camaro and left it full throttle through 3 rd gear. At this point that Trans Am was running about 120 mph and he came up over a hill to meet a turning semi with no trailer fortunately.
He locked up all four disc brakes but ended up smashing into rear passenger side tire. The front end on the passenger side was about to the middle of the car and everything was twisted and crammed in shapes unimaginable. Even though there are negative effects, I think street racing should not be illegal because of the many positive effects it can have too. I have made some good friends through street racing, and I’m sure others have too, so I say there should be sanctioned streets where on certain days people can go to have their fun. Even though I have seen how street racing can kill a beautiful car and ruin my own, it should be the choice of the owners whether or not they want to race or not. Let us race without fear of a ticket or being harassed because our cars are to loud or to fast.
Street racing is going to continue no matter if it is legal or not and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. We can only make it safer by eliminating the other cars that are not there to race.
