With the recent abundance of mass shooting in the U.S., the subject of gun safety has once again been brought into the spotlight. The numbers of crimes involving guns are increasing more and more because of how easy it is to have one. Thousands of people die each year in handgun related incidents in the U.S. and daily citizens can’t manage such a powerful thing. These tragic events serve as reminders that stricter gun control policies should be enforced to ensure public safety. Gun control in this country is not what it should be; it is time the government step in and lay out more laws and stricter penalties. Today’s crimes are becoming more violent than ever because of the widespread use of guns. Guns are involved in many incidents today that people did not even worry about in the past. We see people killed because of gang related incidents, robberies, road rage, and many pointless situations. The main reason is there are just simply too many guns on our streets today.
Guns are everywhere and about anyone can get one, including seventeen years old, which is evident from the Chardon High School shooting on February 27,2012 and the Virginia Tech massacre in Blacksburg on April 16, 2007 (Lepore 38-47).

I believe the government needs to crack down on the number of gun stores, including the illegal ones. There are so many places to buy guns that there is no way that anyone could keep up with them. It is time the government step in and shut down the little places that sell guns and limit the number of guns made every year. Most of the powerful guns on the street today are stolen and get in the wrong hands, like the 22-calobre pistol that was used to kill high schoolers thirty miles outside Cleveland. The suspect T.J. Lane- a seventeen-year-old boy- went to school on Monday, February 27th, sat down at an empty table, reached into a bag, and pulled out a pistol and started firing without saying a word (Lepore 38-47).
The government isn’t doing enough in terms of enforcing gun control laws, consequently making our streets more dangerous. As of 2010, the Government Accountability Office stated that federal law does not prohibit members of terrorist organizations from purchasing or possessing firearms or explosives (gao.gov).
If guns fall into the hands of potential terrorists, it defeats the purpose of the governments pre-existing gun control measures. The need for stricter gun control is evident by the number of deaths cause by handgun related incidents a year. Ten-thousand people die a year in a handgun related incidents in the United States. This number, by far, outweighs those gun related deaths in other countries (Wikipedia).
Other countries have fewer deaths because of their stricter gun control laws, and they require bare arm safety courses. These laws have a direct relationship to the number of gun deaths which occur each year from country to country.
If the U.S. would adopt some of those laws like better education on the use of guns, signing out guns for hunting, stating its purpose of use, and the type of gun. And taking test to show proper knowledge of all the laws regarding the handling of firearms, the number of deaths would drop suitably. Given the tragedies we have witnessed in the past few years involving firearms on our college campuses, we should take as many steps as possible to make sure that anyone with a weapon is mentally stable (Fennell) before they can buy a gun. Civilians having and using guns for their own gains is another reason we need stricter gun control.

In our country, since just about anyone can own a gun legally and illegally, it is much easier for tragedies to occur. Enforcing stricter gun control laws would create a much safer environment for everyone.
