Decision of a being in a critical situation has a significant role in a person’s life. Certain choices can direct a person to be delinquent and thus creates many consequences. At a certain point in a person’s life they go through a situation-willingly or not- where some choices and consequence influences an individuals life. In the stories “Lamb to the slaughter” and “The painted door” by Roald Dahl and Sinclair Ross, the characters choices and consequences lead to downfall within themselves, within society and within their relationship.
John and Ann was a good couple and loved each other. John went to his father’s barn, knowing that it was a deadly blizzard. Ann tried to stop john but he disagreed. John worked hard to please Ann, still no matter how honest he was, no matter how intensely he attempts to satisfy her, she was not pleased. He thinks that “it seemed only right that she should have the best” (pg.48).
Ann loved her husband but he was a simple man, always busy with his work. Thus both John’s and Ann’s choices and consequence leads to downfall within themselves as John chose to kill him in cold and Ann lost her honest husband. Mary Maloney and Patrick had good relation with each other. Mary was a typical house-wife who usually waited for her husband to return home. Patrick Maloney is the only important person for Mary. Patrick came home, tired and silent. It was the last day for the dishonest husband because he was murdered by his own wife. Mary was caring and kind house-wife until Patrick told her that he was leaving Mary forever. Mary Maloney was upset and shocked by her husband. There seemed to be no other way for her than to murder her dishonest husband. So, her extreme love turns into hatred. Thus Patrick’s deceitfulness and Mary’s madness head to downfall within themselves.

John’s father lived away from him so he also had responsibility to look after his father. Hence he was unable to contribute his time for his wife. Ann felt lonely because she rarely got to socialize with her husband. As per described by author the place where she lived was a small town and so there were very few people to socialize. Moreover, having lived in a city before they moved to a small town, Ann was simply not used to the untidy environment in the country side. Both Ann and John use to spend less and less time with each other. In addition, Ann was not used to “playing cards” or “discussing weather” with the neighbors. Ann use to spend her time by painting he walls, which was boring for her. Compared to city life, the life in the small town was boring for her. It added more loneliness to Ann’s life as John was a “quiet-nature” person. Therefore their choice to move to country side was the reason for difficulties. Thus this illustrates that John’s and Ann’s choices and consequences is the reason for their drop in society. Mary is represented as a quiet and caring woman in society. As per author “There was a slow smiling air about her, and about every thing she did” (pg.4).
This shows that she was a caring wife but her nature was very unusual and unpredicted. She is described as an innocent but she turns into an awful woman as soon as she got to know that her husband wants to leave. Mary killed her husband but she was successful to prove herself innocent because her image in society was the image of a gentle woman. After killing her Patrick, Mary went to a convenient store where she behaved normally and thus saved herself. In this way Patrick’s and Mary’s choices and consequences leads to downfall within society.
Finally, the treachery done by Ann was an arrow of poison that went straight to john’s heart. John was hurt very deeply by dishonesty of her wife. He chose to kill himself in deadly wind, instead of blaming his wife. John felling of disgust totally consumed him. John forgot about the fatal storm that had been overcome by the shock given to him by Ann as she was involved in a sinful act. John and Ann spend very less time with each other. This was the main reason for Ann’s loneliness which leads to adultery. John asked one of his friends, Steven to take care for his wife. When John went near the door he found his wife with Steven. John was extremely shocked by her wife’s dishonesty. On the next day Ann found her husband lying death outside. Mary realized that John was near the door as she dreamed it. Thus, this leads to demise in John’s and Ann’s relationship as they never again met each other. Patrick Maloney was the only important person for Mary. She prepared everything for Patrick, ten to five minutes before he returned so he can relax. One day Patrick came with strange news that he was no more interested in Mary. He chose to leave Mary in a critical situation when Mary was pregnant, but he told Mary that she does not need to worry because he would send money for her. This was the cause that Mary’s love turned into extreme hatred. Her hatred reached to extend that she was ready to kill her husband. She killed Patrick with a leg of lamb which she made for meal. Mary tried to make him happy but it really made the things even worse. Ironically, Mary saved herself from the investigators and officers as they felt pity on her and ate the evidence.
