Casinos are the homes of chance, where gamblers engage in games of luck. Unfortunately the casino always ensures that it has the statistical advantage. This is called the house edge. Therefore, customers are more likely to loose money than make to money. However, in the game known as Blackjack or as some call it “21”, it is possible to tip the odds in one’s favor by card counting.
The rules of Blackjack are as follows: all royals have a value equaling ten and all number cards are equal to their integer. An ace can either be valued as a one or an eleven depending of which beneficial to the player. For example a hand made up of an ace, a five and a ten is equal to 16, because if the ace were equal to eleven it would be a bust.
The goal in Blackjack is to get a hand with a total value as close to 21 as possible without going over. If one’s hand does goes over 21 it is a bust. In Blackjack the participants play against the dealer as opposed to each other.
Once all players have placed their bets the dealer then distributes two cards to each player and two to himself as well; one facing up, the other down. Play moves in a rotation, the dealer turns to each player and asks if he wants to hit, which is it take an additional card to try get closer 21, or if he wants to stand(do nothing).
If the player hasn’t busted from his first hit than he can hit again. Play does not move until the player busts or stands.
After all players have finished their turns the dealer then flips up his second card, if the total value of his hand is 16, or lower, he must hit, but if his hand is 17 or higher he must stand. There is no exception to this ruler. If the dealer busts then all players haven’t busted win, if he doesn’t his hand is compared each player’s and the player with the hand closest to 21 wins. A tie is called a push. The player gets his bet back but earns no winnings.

One should first be familiar with Blackjack’s basic strategy before learning how to card to count. There are many variations of basic strategy, but they all revolve around the fact that there are more cards worth 10, 16 out of 52 to be precise, than any other cards in a deck.
Blackjack like all casino games is set up so the casino is more likely to win. This might cause one to reason that if were to play like the house (stand on 17 or higher, hit on 16 or less) it would be even odds and you’d win the same of times as the dealer. However, because the dealer plays after the all players, if both you and the dealer bust, you lose anyway. Taking into account the payout bonus for getting a blackjack (an ace and a ten together), it works out to roughly a 5.5 percent house advantage.
A player utilizing basic strategy assumes that the dealer’s second card is worth 10 despite the fact that many times it isn’t. Based on the dealer’s face-up card, the player can then categorize the dealer’s hand into two categories: hands that are likely to bust the dealer and hands that are likely to give the dealer a good chance of winning. Knowing this the player can then react appropriately to the cards showing. (See img)
Unlike in the movie 21, card counting does not require photographic memory or savant like math abilities, it is simply an extension of basic strategy. However basic strategy takes into account the whole deck. Including cards that have already been played, and subsequently discarded. What card counting does is calculate the odd of a ten value card being drawn from only the cards still in the deck.
There are several card counting methods but The Hi-Lo system proposed by Edward O. Thorp in 1963 and later refined by Julian Braun and Stanford Wong is one of the simplest. A point system is established with all the cards in deck being assigned certain values. Twos through Sixes are given a +1 value. Tens through Aces are given a -1 value and Sevens, Eights, and Nines are valued at zero. All the player has to do is follow the breakdown of points as the cards are distributed by the dealer. As the cards are revealed the player adds their values together. The count starts at zero and is reset after each time the deck is shuffled. For example If the first hand dealt from a deck has a Six (+1), an Eight (0), a Queen (-1), an Ace (-1), a Three (+1), and a Four (+1), the running count is +1.

The higher the count, the more low-value cards have been the discarded. This means that there is a higher concentration of high-value than low-value cards still in the deck. This is important because basic strategy is based on the assumption that the next card will have a value of 10. If you know that there are a greater percentage of 10-value cards in the deck than usual, that assumption becomes much more concrete, and you can bet your money with much greater confidence.
Remember, the higher the count the bigger the bet and the more aggressive one should play. If the count is near 0, the deck is neutral and player has no clear advantage over the dealer, and when the total is very low, the player should bet the minimum or even leave the table. A typical card counting player uses these beneficial odds to make a big win or two while the deck is still “hot.”
Card counting is not illegal. Courts ruled that it is simply a skillful use of the information available to the player. However, Casinos are private properties which, means they can throw you out whenever or for what ever they want to. Casinos have also made a number of steps to eradicate or least make card counting much more difficult for players. For one they have security cameras in the ceiling, called by players as the “eyes in the sky” which keep a look out for known card counters. Casinos have also implemented multideck games, with two decks shuffled together. Today, most casinos use six, eight, or even more decks These additional decks must be accounted for so in order to acquire the “true count,” at the most basic level, you simply need to divide the running count by the number of decks remaining in the shoe (a plastic box used for dealing cards). This makes it much harder to reach high enough count to give the player an advantage. Dealers also reshuffle the deck more often resetting the count to 0.
