Most of my summer holidays ended up boring and wasteful. My usual procedure during the days without school is going to bed after midnight and waking up in the afternoon. I always hoped for an exciting and interesting summer holiday until last year, when my hope was successfully attained after I’ve gone to my first hiking expedition. The reason I went on the hiking trip was because it is a requirement for the Duke of Edinburgh award. I didn’t want to participate on the hike at first, but with persuasion from my brother, I finally agreed to take this valuable opportunity.
The requirement of this award is to hike for at least 30 kilometers over two days and one night. I went on the hike with a group of teenagers who every one of us had never met before. At the end of the trip, we became great friends. I had to admit I was extremely regretful during the first few hours of the expedition. I thought I should have spent my summer holiday comfortably instead of coming out in the steam.
Hiking is definitely arduous, since I had to carry more than twenty pounds of personal effects, plus walking on muddy trails. But, it was definitely challenging and thrilling, which I hoped for. I remember during the hike, one of the hikers got tired and wanted to return home. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of the forest, where no cell phones or cars could be reached. Using the shortest interval of time as possible, since it was getting dark, each one of us gave courage and comfort to the dismayed hiker. Amazingly, she recovered at prompt and continued on the hike.
The Essay on What I Did During My Weeklong Summer Vacation
I learned the art of stickin’ around during my recent week off from work. Usually, when I take vacation time during the summer, it’s so that my family and I can take a trip somewhere. Last year, for example, we Sullivans disappeared from Sanford for ten days and visited family and friends in North Carolina, Virginia and Philadelphia and even spent an afternoon in New York City. In our house, ...
After that, we worked very well as a group. By helping each other, we quickly arrived at our campsite. Once we arrived on the campsite, the first action we took wasn’t to rest. Rather, we built cooking shelters and set up our tents. These actions are essential to take before sunset. Afterwards, we split into two groups.
One group had to prepare the night’s dinner and the other was in charge to filter water that had been taken from the nearby lake. We worked extremely well together since everyone cooperated. This was the ultimate challenge of the entire award. Obviously, we were successful. Not only we had a wonderful dinner, and also, we had clean water to drink. After this hiking expedition, I have arranged a couple of backpacking trips with my friends during the long summer holiday.
Hiking is definitely worth going to because it is not only fun and interesting, also, I can learn how to work with others. Sometimes, I can even test my leadership skills. When I head back to school, I will never have the time to go on hikes until the next summer holiday.
