Over the course of this summer I read four books. The books I read were Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J K Rowling, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry again. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J K Rowling was the first book I read this summer and I really liked it. I decided to read the 5 th Harry Potter book because I had it and I never really got a chance to read it. The book begins were it had left you of in the 4 th book when Harry is just about to enter his 5 th year at Hogwarts. He still lives with his aunt and uncle whom he hates because they are mean and evil to him.
The letters from his friends are very dull and they have nothing to say, which confuses him and makes him furious. He is also mad because he’s still stuck with the Dursley’s all summer long. The story goes with his adventures and challenges throughout his 5 th year. The genre is fantasy complete with magic. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes the Harry Potter books. I would also recommend that if you have never read any of the previous books you start from the beginning.
I can’t wait ’till the next book comes out! The next book I read was The Giver by Lois Lowry which I actually bought a couple years ago at a book fair. It sat on my shelf for two years then it was recommended to me again, so this time I read it. I ended up liking it so much I contacted the author via email and asked if she would ever consider selling the movie rights. She replied and said that the movie rights have been sold and there’s a movie in the making. The story is about a boy named Jonas living in the perfect utopia where there is no war, no crime, and no hate.

The ceremony of twelve’s is very soon and that is the most important ceremony of all; it is when your assignment or job for life is decided. Little does Jonas know that he is about to receive the most important assignment of all. Shortly after the assignment is given he meets The Giver. This sci-fi book is one of the best books I’ve read and is also a Newberry Award winning book. If I had to recommend any book this would be one of my top picks to recommend. I am also very excited to read the sequel to The Giver: Gathering Blue.
Another book I read over the summer is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book was recommended by my mom. The whole set up of the story is about a civilization that allows couples only two children. The story follows a third child named Luke who must stay in hiding for his whole life. Luke feels lonely not knowing anybody but his family. Luke sets out to find other “shadow children” as they call them.
This book is futuristic fiction. I thought the book was pretty good. It was an odd way of seeing the future world. Among the Hidden relates to The Giver because they are both set in the future and both authors create totally different worlds than we live in today. The last and final book I read over summer vacation was Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The book is about a ten year old girl named Annemarie.
She lives in Denmark with her family during the time of WWII. There are Nazi soldiers on every street corner guarding there new captured territory. It has been like this for over two years now and things are starting to change. Jewish owned businesses are starting to close down and Danish-Jews are supposed to be “relocated.” There’s only one thing that scares Annemarie most, her friend Ellen is Jewish. The genre is historical fiction. This book is also a Newberry Award winning book and I would recommend this book to Middle School students and adults.
It was very tragic what happened during WWII and this book explains what it would be like living in Denmark during that time in war. To sum it all up I really enjoyed reading these books. I’m also glad of the different genres I chose from because if it were up to me I’d be reading all fantasy books. All these books were great as I said and I recommend all of them.
