Passing is a very big part of football, and the key to a good passing game is a good running game.
The Patriots running game made the difference. Running back Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk combined for 118 yards and a touchdown. Rushing yards are very important when you are ahead in the game because running the ball keeps the game clock moving. With the strength in the running game and their lack of turnovers, the New England Patriots were able to hold on to the ball. As important as these numbers are, defense is what wins championships, and New England’s defense was too efficient for the Eagles to handle. The Eagles did play well on defense, with two sacks, one fumble recovery and not very many defensive breakdowns, but New England’s defense was the difference maker on the field.
The Patriots defense, led by defensive coordinator Romeo Crenel, was outstanding. The Patriots defense forced three interceptions, and confused the Eagle’s offensive line into four sacks on the night. The very physical, very fast play of the Patriots defense was the difference maker in this game. The Eagles offence was able to gain more total yards, 369 for the Eagles, 331 for the Patriots, but with two more takeaways, and two more sacks then the Eagles, New England was able to stop momentum when they needed too. With the Super Bowl MVP on their team, New England was able to pull off their third Super Bowl win in four years, making themselves one of five ‘dynasties’ in NFL history.
