In the story, “The Birth-Mark”, written by Nathaniel Hawthorn it was about a man who was a scientist who tried to change his wife appearance. At the end of the story his wife died because, he tried to change the nature of her face by trying to remove the inner beauty of her birth mark on her face. The symbolism of the birth mark represents death, beauty, and nature. My essay will be about how death, beauty, and nature represent the symbolism of the birth mark.
First, the symbolism of the birth-mark represents beauty because, the mark on Aylmer wife Georgiana was unique. For example, Hawthorne said, “ Some fastidious person -but they were exclusively of her own sex- affirmed that the bloody Hand, as they chose to call it, quite destroyed the effect of Georgiana’s beauty, and rendered her countenance even hideous. (p. 640) He was saying that he should have left the birth-mark alone because, it repents the inner beauty and outer beauty of her face and that changing it only made her appearance look ugly. I think everybody has there own beauty that is a part of them that can’t be changed. That nobody can change the inner or outer beauty of that person it will always be there no matter what changes they make or try to hide. Beauty is something special and it shouldn’t be changed by no one everybody has something that is beautiful about them even if there outside is not so beautiful.
The Term Paper on The types of organizational change
“Organisational change is an irreversible adoption of any feature of its strucutre, personel, products or processes” (J.Naylor) Today’s business environment is forcing entities for changes. If we would think from corporate point of view it is essential for the companies’ success to be in accordance with new markets demands. On the other hand, individuals are ruling the ...
Second, the symbolism of the birth-mark represents death because, Aylmer wife died at the end of the story because, he was trying to change something that was meant to be left alone. Hawthorne said,” As the last crimson tint of the birth-mark that sole token of human imperfection-faded from her cheek, the parting breath of the now perfect woman passed into the atmosphere, and her soul, lingering a moment near her husband, took its heavenward flight.” (p.650) If Hawthorne would have accepted his wife as she was she wouldn’t have died of the death of his hands. So it was his fault really because, he made her felt as if her birth-mark was an ugly thing on her face. When it really was not ugly it brought her appearance out it made her even more beautiful and unique from everybody else. So by him trying to change the uniqueness of her beauty she died in the process of trying to change something that was meant to be left alone.
Third, the symbolism of the birth-mark is nature because, Aylmer was trying to change the nature of his wife appearance. Aylmer he was trying to be God in a sense because, he wanted to remove something that was not invited by man. Hawthorne said,” I feel myself fully competent to render this dear cheek as faultless as its fellow; most beloved, what will be my triumph, when I shall have corrected what Nature left imperfect, in her fairest work!” (p.642) Hawthorne was so determine to change something that was meant to be left alone. He changed the nature of his wife face but, at the end he ends up killing his wife. He should have expected the nature of his wife outer beauty and left her birth-mark alone. He should have expected all the flows that she had because, she loved him unconditionally even with some of his imperfect nature of his appearance. He should have let nature takes it’s course because, things change on it’s on time. His wife birth-mark could have eventually changed on it’s own time. If he would have let nature take’s its place his wife would not have died at the expense of his hands.
The Essay on Science vs. Nature
Throughout history, many people have often become wary of the steps science has taken, perhaps believing that man has taken on the power of God to control life and death, even to control nature itself. More recently, cloning and genetic selection have been seen as man trying to “play God” by creating or altering life. The short story “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne is the tale of a man ...
In conclusion, beauty, death, and nature represent the symbolism of the birth-mark because, it represented one person a woman who was beautiful in her own way who died of her selfishness of her husband who was trying to change the nature of her face. Aylmer challenged nature and he failed at it because, he tried to remove the birth-mark off Georgiana’s face she died. That Aylmer believed that science was better than nature because, he believed that science was better than nature. So science decide to punish Aylmer to show him that it wasn’t important about the birth-mark on Georgiana’s face but, the inner and outer beauty should be the reason why he love’s her and want to always be with her. So at the end he lost the only woman who loved him with all his flaws and loved him no matter what. At the end when you try to change things you may loose it forever and it may not come back the same as it was before.
