Throughout this paper I will be analyzing the “Symphony No. 94 in G Major” composed by one of the best composers of the classical period joseph haydn. i watched the event on youtube.com, this musical event took place in copley symphony hall on june 5 2011. the copley music hall was established in 1929 but at that it was called the “fox theatre movie palace, but later on it became under the property of the san diego symphony, this acquisition took place in 1984, they renovated the hall dramatically adding a lot of technologies. the name of the orchestra that performed in this event is San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra. this civic youth orchestra foundation started in 1955, and since then it has enriched the lives of young musicians all over Southern California, they are group of young men and women whose age does not exceed 22.
The conductor of this musical event is called Warren Gref. he practices many music relatated activities including playing the horn, conducting many symphonies in many different events and with many different orchestras. he is also an associate faculty member at the University of California at San Diego. what caught my eye immediately when watching this video is the size of the hall and the organization within it. the conductor whore a black tuxedo and looked very formal, in addition, the orchestra were wearing all tuxedos and looked formal as well. this could be due to the fact that they are all still very young musicians and have a lot of chance to improve their skills. this is what made me come to the conclusion that they might be not be perfect in playing all the notes in correctly and in the correct form but they are hard workers and have great potential.

Joseph haydn was an Austrian born composer who spent his life as a court musician , although many people thought that he was secluded form the musical world he is still known as one of the greatest composers of his era. through research i have found many interesting facts about haydn. one of his best and most known compositions, “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (Emporer’s Hymn)” i still used untill this day in the german national anthem. although he was not as popular as mozart he is reffered it as the “papa” of symphonies. in addition, earlier in mozarts musical career he used to learn from haydn but mozart decided to leave him and learn from others as haydn was busy composing his own symphonies and traveling around the world with his music. Haydn died a tragic death suffering from fever.”Upon Haydn’s tragic death, phrenologists took his head from his grave and brought it back for study. After quite a series of extraordinary events, Haydn’s head made its way safely to the wonderful display in the Esterhazy estate where the rest of his body lay peacefully then and to this day.”
The symphony played in this concert is is symphony number 94. this is his second of the twelve so-called London symphonies. It is popularly known as the Surprise Symphony. he composed this symphony in 1791 in London for a concert series he gave during the first of his visits to England (1791–1792).
this symphony got this nickname beacuse it had a startlingly loud chord—that interrupts the otherwise soft and gentle flow of the second movement. This loud cord did not appear in the original score. Rather, it was added by the composer as a “surprise” in the London premiere on March 23, 1792, later on it was part of the symphony in all perfromances. the instruments that are used to play this symphony include two each of flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, plus timpani, and the usual string section consisting of violins (first and second), violas, cellos, and double basses. the symphony is composed of four movements; Adagio – Vivace assai, Andante, Allegro molto, Allegro molto.
The symphony is usually played in 22-24 minutes however in this event the duration of the symphony is 24 minutes. the conductor starts this event by playing the first movement adagio-vivace assai. the tempo of the first movement is adagio which means “slow” tempo. the dynamics of the first movement is piano which means quite. as for the pitch of the first movement we could say that they’re both high notes and low notes, the high notes are played constantly by the violins throughout the first movement. i felt that the nickname “surprise” symphony really means a lot, as the differences in the itch of the notes played really surprise the audiences ears in addition the dynamics of the first movement is changing a lot. i believe that this symphony is tonal. interestingly i felt that the melody of it is conjunct in which i felt that it runs smoothly and could be sung. the first movement finishes in minute 8 by the violins playing high pitch notes loudly. the texture is homophonic as there are two or more melodic lines played at the same time also a cord is being played at the same time. there is evident consonance in the first movement as there is harmony between all instruments and the notes played.
The Essay on Second Movement Piece Played Piano
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something ...
the second movement starts at minute 9 in the event. the tempo of the first movement is andante which means moderately slow. the second movement is the most famous movement of this symphony as it gets quieter and quieter, approaching silence and then there is a sudden loud chord from the entire orchestra. the texture of the second movement is also homophonic as there is also a chord played. the melody disjunct. as i have said before the symphony as a whole is full of surprises but the best are found in the second movement of this symphony.
Finally, i would like to conclude by saying that i really liked the second movement the most as i felt that the melodies played are really known as i could identify that i have heard them before. i also found that the element of surprise that haydn uses in this symphony is very interesting and catchy and makes people want to hear the whole symphony more than one time. haydn is a great composer that is infamous and i believe taht more and more orchestra should start to perform his symphonies more and more to ge the global recognition he needs just like mozart, Beethoven and Bach.
The Essay on Slow Movement from Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet
The slow movement from Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet is said to be one of Haydn’s greatest works. He uses a simple yet classic melody throughout his piece that is the underlying feature of this movement. The melody is in the form AABCC but the movement itself is in the style of theme and variations. The music in the movement is played sweetly (dolce) and is in cut time. The ...
