I belong to an average urban middle class family currently based in New Delhi, India. My parents have inculcated in me a strong sense of honesty, fair play and social responsibility. I believe that one should honour one’s obligations towards one’s roots. I have been a good student throughout, consistently counted amongst the outstanding members of my class. I secured the second rank in a batch of over 450 students in my pre-university exams. A country as vast as India stands a lot to benefit from E-governance and E-commerce, if implemented such that people trust it well enough to use it.
It is thus imperative to design such systems from the ground up making them better suited to Indian requirements than to use re-engineered systems imported from the West, which is sadly, the norm. I have had the opportunity to equip myself with the requisite background by opting for papers like Networking, Operating Systems and Software Engineering, and by designing software pertaining to related topics. With my Final Year Project, in which I am designing a Web Based Distributed Database for an Online Trading House, I am trying to gain more insight into the various associated issues. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship will provide me with the opportunity to pursue my aim of harnessing Networking for the uplift ment of the common man, utilising it in providing secure transactions in schemes like Micro-Credit, Taxation, Billing and Booking. Today it is a fact and not fiction. Earlier human advancement would have meant human mobility.
