TAGORE: A CITIZEN OF HIS COUNTRY AND OR THE UNIVERSE
Rabindranath Tagore Born at Jorasanko in the Tagore family in Bengal India on 7th May 1861. He was the ninth son of Debendranath and Sarada Devi. His grandfather Dwarkanath Tagore was a rich landlord and social reformer.Rabindranath become a citizen not only of India but of the world. Rabindranath Rabindra Nath Tagore had his initial education in Oriental Seminary School. But he did not like the conventional education and started studying at home under several teachers. After undergoing his upanayan (coming-of-age) rite at the age of eleven, Tagore and his father left Calcutta in 1873 to tour India for several months, visiting his father’s Santiniketan estate and Amritsar before reaching the Himalayan hill station of Dalhousie. There, Tagore read biographies, studied history, astronomy, modern science, and Sanskrit, and examined the classical poetry of Kalidasa. Tagore was an icon of Indian culture. He was a poet, philosopher, musician, writer, and educationist. His creations of in numerable poems, short stories, dramas & there by the establishment of visva-Bharati at Bolepur West Bengal made him renowned not only in India but to all the countries of the world. People all over the world today, remember Tagore as a great poet, philosopher, painter, patriot and above all, a universalist.
Tagore acted as a spiritual ambassador of the East and the West. His world university in Bolepur is an ideal institution of the world. Many a student from all the countries of the world come here for education in various subjects. Tagore’s versatile genius in his wonderful creations fetched him name and fame from his country and abroad. Recognised as a great poet, Rabindranath’s trend of thoughts gradually turned more and more universal. The idea of universal man slowly took shape in his mind. He sailed for England. In 1890, Rabindranath Tagore moved to Shilaidaha (now in Bangladesh) to look after the family estate. Between 1893 and 1900 Tagore wrote seven volumes of poetry, which included Sonar Tari (The Golden Boat) and Khanika. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore became the editor of the magazine Bangadarshan. He Established Bolpur Bramhacharyaashram at Shantiniketan, a school based on the pattern of old Indian Ashrama. In 1902, his wife Mrinalini died. Tagore composed Smaran ( In Memoriam ), a collection of poems, dedicated to his wife. By this time, Rabindranath won Nobel Prize for literature and that gave him an international status. The university of Calcutta also conferred the title—D. Litt. On him. Rabindranath loved the Indians as well as all the people of the world. He composed national anthems for India and Bangladesh. He was more than a literary lion and a cultural hero, who belived in one world idea. He had an unshakable faith in the creator of the universe and always belived that truth is always triumphed. Rabindranath tagore was also called gurudev because he wrote the song ‘vande matram’.so all people of India with respect said him ‘gurudev’. In 1905, Lord Curzon decided to divide Bengal into two parts. Rabindranath Tagore strongly protested against this decision. Tagore wrote a number of national songs and attended protest meetings. He introduced the Rakhibandhan ceremony , symbolizing the underlying unity of undivided Bengal.
In 1909, Rabindranath Tagore started writing Gitanjali. In 1912, Tagore went to Europe for the second time. On the journey to London he translated some of his poems/songs from Gitanjali to English. He met William Rothenstein, a noted British painter, in London. Rothenstien was impressed by the poems, made copies and gave to Yeats and other English poets. Yeats was enthralled. He later wrote the introduction to Gitanjali when it was published in September 1912 in a limited edition by the India Society in London. Rabindranath Tagore was awarded Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali. In 1915 he was knighted by the British King George V. Tagore came in contact with Gandhiji whose sacrifice for the nation touched Tagore’s heart. He coined the name M K Gandhi with the word ‘Mahatma’. Tagore was invited to America and Japan where he lectured on religion, culture and race relations. In 1919, following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre,The British respected him and conferred on him the prestigious title ‘knighthood’. Later on Rabindranath travelled to Paris, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany where he was warmly responded. He was welcomed to upsala to speak from church altar and Darmstadt to see ‘Tagore week’ there.

Tagore visited Russia with the idea of turning his personal property into some kind of cooperative. An invitation came from China where Tagore opened the door of cultural contact between the two great countries. Rabindranath was also invited to visit Peru to participate in its independence celebrations. Tagore moved to England, Norway, Germany and thereafter to central Europe on special invitation. Later on, Tagore visited sofia, Bucharest, Istambule, Athens and cairo. Tagore was also welcomed to Singapore, Malaya, Java Sumatra, Bornio. In Berlin he had a memorable conversation with Einstein. Tagore’s paintings were exhibited in Newyork and admired by the people. Thus Rabindranath made worldwide tours to exchange his views with the people and imbue them with his feelings that ‘we must go beyond all narrow bonds and look towards the day when Budha, Christ and Muhammad will become one’. Seventy years are going to be completed after Tagore’s death but his creations, his language and literature his doctrins of education have not gone into oblivion. They are in full spirit running into the veins of our educations. so we are to say, so long our language and literature will survive Tagore’s ideals, his preachings will survive as valuable gems of the universe. In 1940 Oxford University arranged a special ceremony in Santiniketan and awarded Rabindranath Tagore with Doctorate Of Literature. Gurudev Rabindranath. Tagore passed away on August 7, 1941 in his ancestral home in Calcutta.
