The tape measure is an instrument used to measure objects. Tape measures are found in most households and are fairly simple to use. Standard tape measures measure in feet and inches. The tape measure is somewhat square in shape and made of steel. It has two flat sides, which one of the sides usually has a belt clip connected to it held with a single screw. There are also three screws on the backside holding the two flat sides together. One at the top and two in each bottom corner. There is a flexible flat steel retractable ruler like device that measures in feet and inches. Above this ruler like mechanism there is a plastic button which works like a light switch moving up and down. This can lock the flexible steel ruler in place or release it so it fits your needs. This is made this way so that one person can measure something which would normally take two people; one holding each end. The ruler and locking device is the main components (see Figure 1), which make this, what it is. The ruler device can be pulled out of the steel casing and locked into place. If the ruler device is not locked into place the ruler will retract back into the casing. This is widely used by construction workers. It makes a fairly accurate measurement of an object, but is not used for technological measuring use. Source: http://www.measuring-tape.com/10.htm
