Target Corporation – Contributing to Society Target Corporation is a sixth-largest merchandise retailer in the United States known not only for its sales but also for its numerous contributions to the community. The company is one of the most philanthropic companies in the U.S. Take Charge of Education program is one of such initiatives. This initiative has raised over $183 million for schools since 1997. Recently Target has donated $2,000 to the College of Business and Economic Center for Career Development. According to John Andrews, the director of the center, the funds will be used to assist students in polishing their professional image and finding jobs and internships (Target Helps WVU Business School, 2006).
Target also helps elementary schools. For example, total of all of Targets donations through September 2006 to Silver Gate Elementary School makes up $4958.71. The Silver Gate School had a possibility to purchase new equipment and high tech and state-of-the-art capabilities in order to create necessary conditions for education and training of children in educational institutions as well as for intellectual growth and development So, how does the program work? Target Corporation offers a special fundraising program Take Charge of Education. This initiative was developed in April 1997. It embraces the companys commitment to education and is designed to enhance educational efforts for children in communities across the country (Take Charge of Education Backgrounder 2007).

The customer has to find/designate a school to receive money from purchase. As a next step, 1% of customers purchases at Targtet.com and Target and ?% of all purchases made elsewhere with the Target Visa card will be donated for books, supplies, grants, new classroom technologies or anything else the school needs (Take Charge of Education 2007).

When the schools receive funds, they reallocate the resources for anything they need. As of March 2006, total payout reached $183 million and the most recent payout made up more than $15.6 million dollars.
