We Students had an opportunity to learn about the functions, the misconceptions and the advantages of having a Coal-Fired power plant as the source of our daily need of electricity. We had conducted a symposium with the representatives of the company (Panay Electric Company Inc.) last Thursday, October 19,2011. And now we know the answers behind every inquisitions of the people of Panay region, and that is, “Is coal really the answer to affordable and sustainable energy?” To find answers for this question, it is best to know about the advantages of coal fired power plants. Some of its advantages include reliability, affordability, abundance, known technologies, safety, and efficiency. One of the greatest advantages of coal fired power plant is reliability. It is with this fact that advanced pulverized coal fired power plants are designed to support the grid system in avoiding blackouts. Also one of its advantages is its affordability; in the sense that, energy produced from coal fired plants is cheaper than any other energy sources.
Since coal is abundant, it is definitely cheap to produce power using this fuel. Abundance is one of the advantages of having coal as an energy supplier, mainly because Coal is still accessible for hundreds of years, With this great amount of coal available for use, coal fired plants can be continuously fueled in many years to come. The production and use of coal as a fuel are well understood, and the technology required in producing it, is constantly advancing. Moreover, coal-mining techniques are continuously enhanced to ensure that there is a constant supply of coal for the production of power and energy. The coal-fired power plant is also safe to use, mainly because it is considered safer than nuclear power plants. A coal power plant’s failure is certainly not likely to cause catastrophic events; such as, a nuclear meltdown would. And Coal is also easier to transport to power station; hence, it’s an advantage. But still there are people who are against it, because of their conflicting ideas and beliefs. So therefore I conclude that having a Coal-Fired Power Plant is a better, safer, more reliable, less environmental risk, and is a cheaper way of producing electric energy to produce and supply the people’s need of electricity here in Panay region.
