It has been asked if healthcare is a right or privilege, with the Affordable Care Act, coming into play it would appear to be no choice in the matter. Everyone will have to have some type of insurance coverage or pay a penalty. Congress is having a hard time trying to decide how to fund on this bill. Will the bill help or hurt America? Some issues I see are how will it hurt the small business owner, will some Americans lose full time job status so that the business owner does not have to pay more and how much will the cost of insurance affect one’s income and family spending. This paper will discuss what the Affordable Care Act and how it affects millions of Americans. This paper will also discuss problems that the Affordable Care Act faces, the history of the Affordable Care act and how has the ACA been effective in address the issues it faces.
“In March 2010, President Obama signed comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), into law. The law makes preventive care—including family planning and related services—more accessible and affordable for many Americans (www.hhs.gov, 2013).” The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPCA), or Affordable Care Act (ACA) for short, is the new health care reform law in America and is often called by its nick-name Obamacare because it was implemented during President Barack Obama’s presidency. “The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is made up of the Affordable Health Care for America Act, the Patient Protection Act, and the health care related sections of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act and the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Ac ( www.obamacarefacts.com, 2013).” The ACA will allow young Americans to stay on their parent’s health insurance plan until the age of 26. This will allow at least 3.4 million young adults have health care coverage. Also under the ACA insurance companies will not be able to ban coverage on those with pre-existing conditions. Before the ACA passed, one could be denied coverage or treatment if one had been sick in the past.
