The Atkins Diet Many of us are interested in good nutrition and a healthy diet. The data reported answers the questions concerning the effectiveness of the Atkins diet compared with other popular diet plans. The report presents a summary account of the diet study conducted at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Yet, the study is not a much more thorough analysis on the ground as far as the quantity of participants was limited. The report provided a snapshot over a twelve-month period and used comparative data from similar researches. The new findings support other researches that assert Atkins dieters lose more weight in the short term (Hellmich).
The researchers at Stanford University studied 311 premenopausal women 15-100 pounds overweight and assigned them to one of four diet books: Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (the diet based on high-protein and high-fat products), The Zone (the diet that limits carbohydrates and emphasizes lean protein), Eat More, Weigh Less (the vegetarian diet that cuts simple carbohydrates and reduces total fat back to maximum 10% of calories), and The LEARN (the weight management program based on combination of diet and exercises).
According to the findings, at 12 months Atkins dieters lost 10 pounds in comparison with average of 3.5 pounds lost on the Zone program, 5.7 pounds on the LEARN program and 4.8 pounds on the Eat More, Weigh Less plan, that is a statistically considerable difference. Generally, Atkins dieters reported better improvements in HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides (blood fats) compared to other diet plans. Overall, the researchers from the Stanford Prevention Research Center confirm the effectiveness of the Atkins diet by assuming that the diet may succeed through its assertion cut back on carbohydrates. At the same time, Sears and Ornish (the authors of the diet books whose diet plans didnt show considerable results (Eat More, Weigh Less and The Zone) claimed that the study participants were not following their diet plans properly. Further analysis may be required to conduct an in-depth analysis using a wider representative sample in order to achieve more reliable results. Bibliography Hellmich, N.
