I have recently attended a conference on the process of active listening and the benefits that can come from it. As some of you may know active listening is something that you need to practice to become good at it. One of the first steps of active listening is listening and understanding. When you are listening to someone make sure that you look at them and read their nonverbal communication to get a better understanding of how they feel and what they are saying. Next you can empathize with that person by truly understanding what they are meaning. Ask and encourage the person who you are listening to. By asking questions you are showing the person that you are listening and encouraging them to give you their opinions on the topic.
The last step in active listening would be to paraphrase and summarize what your counterpart has said. Repeating their ideas in your own words helps the other person know that you understand what they have said. Never interrupt the person who is speaking. Active listening in the workplace can improve many situations and could be an invaluable skill. It can increase operational decisions, customer satisfaction, and group dynamics. According to “The benefits of active listening for strategic development” (2012), “active listening is known to solve 60% of organizational errors and nearly 60% of all errors in an organization are related in some form to failure of active listening.” Active listening has also been known to work well in organizations that have diversity. This helps because each person has different values and principles.

Diversity helps by creating new methods of solving problems within the organization. When it comes to board meetings that are usually boring you can put your active listening skills to test. This way you will more likely retain the information that is told. By having active listening skills you could avoid a lot of misunderstandings when it comes to discussions you may have with anyone. In conclusion active listening can be a vibrant part of all of us. We need it in order to avoid misunderstandings and fully understand what a person is trying to say and how they feel. Active listening can help us understand others when we really do not want to.
