The field of geology helps us understand our surroundings on earth. The benefits of geology include how to protect our environment and supplies us with natural resources. Geology helps assist us in avoiding geologic hazards and is based on the scientific method. One of the great contributions to human understanding made by geology is the concept of the vastness of geologic time. The benefits of geology helps us understand plate tectonics which is the theory of the crust and upper mantle of of the Earth being in constant motion, slipping on a partially molten layer called the asthenosphere and is largely accepted by the scientific community because of its great range of observed phenomena than any other theory.
The benefits of geology helps us understand the Earth and that it has two engines, an internal engine and external engine. An internal engine is propelled mostly by the temperature changing within the earth’s mantle which can be caused by the decaying of radioactive minerals and builds up the earth. An external engine is powered by the sun and gravity and can cause the hydrologic cycle which are ocean currents and weather patterns. The external engine does the exact opposite of an internal engine by weathering and eroding the Earth and the Earth can seek what is called an equilibrium.
The Essay on The Origin of Old-Earth Geology and its Ramifications
Dr. Terry Mortenson in the article The Origin of Old- Earth Geology and its Ramifications on Life in the 21st Century, discusses a well know debate that goes back many years. In this review I will give a brief overview of what the article itself is about. Along with that, I will discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses that I have found and thought about. There are some very great points in ...
Geology can help us see that about seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is under water. With geology we can find that the source of water comes from within the Earth which is emitted from early volcanoes and vents. Degassing is a process where the planet was still hot and steaming. The benefits of geology can help us see the deep internal parts of the Earth through a branch of of geology called geophysics.
Through geophysics we can study seismic waves, the earth’s magnetic field, gravity, and heat. Geophysics helps us to have a clearer picture of the Earth’s interior. The heat flow from the continents is the same as that from the ocean crust. With the benefit of geology we know the force of gravity varies with the mass of the objects and the distance between them. Basically, the greater the mass or density and the closer objects are to one another the greater the force of gravity.
Geology helps us see that there is a magnetic field that surrounds the Earth and that the strength of the magnetic field is greatest at the magnetic poles. One theory of the Earth’s magnetism might be generated within the liquid outer core by circulating electric currents which can be caused by the polarity of the Earth’s magnetic fields changing which is called a magnetic reversal.
We can benefit by knowing about seismic waves which is a branch of geology that shows that the earth’s crust is thinner beneath the oceans than it is beneath the continents. Seismic waves shows us that these waves travel faster in oceanic crust than in continental crust. The oceanic crust is denser and that two types of crust are made of different rock based on the indications of velocity difference. The oceanic crust is primarily made up of basalt, while the continental crust is primarily made up of granite.
By seeing information from some of these fields of geology, we can benefit from them and learn more about geology and God’s creation.
