The introduction of different versions of the bible has had different interpretations and meanings to different people. Some translations have had major variations while others have minor differences. The King James Version is one of the translations which have words and phrases which are not understood by many. It’s considered therefore the most complicated of all the translations of the bible. The New International Version on the other hand is considered the easiest bible with simple phrases to be read and understood. The king James version in introduces the passage in Luke 7:11-17, verse 11 it says “and it came to pass…
” The NRSV version introduces it as “soon afterwards… ” While the contemporary version also introduces it as “soon afterwards… ” These variations create a difference which to many may not be easily understood. In the same verse in the KJV the word much has been used to mean many people. The contemporary version refers to a large crowd. These variations bring a totally different understanding to different people and may be considered an error in the KJV by the users of the contemporary version and the NRSV versions. In verse 12 the King James Version uses the word nigh to mean as they approached or came closer.
Nigh has a totally different connotation in other contexts, the same is seen in verse 14, the words bier and bare have been used here to mean coffin and those carrying the coffin. The NRSV uses the words bier and the bearer and in the contemporary version the English is quite clear because they use simply the coffin and those carrying the coffin. The use of these two words for someone not familiar with these terms may bring totally a different meaning. The KJV has been written with alot of errors e. g. in verse 11, the use of the phrase much people is not correct.

In verse 16, the use of phrase fear came on all is not correct. The right phrase could be fear came over all. The contemporary version and the NRSV versions have almost the same sentence construction with very little variations of the words. The King James version seem to bring out issues dramatically unlike the other versions, it introduces the whole passage with the phrase “and it came to pass… ” this is a very dramatic introduction which makes someone eager to know what is going on the whole passage. The NRSV version also has dramatic and interesting phrases.
It describes that after touching the bear, Jesus said to the young man who was dead to arise. The people were amazed on this and this version says “fear seized all of them, and they glorified God saying ‘a great prophet has arisen amongst us’… ” The use of the exclamation mark indicates that there was amazement amongst the people and the reader of the passage can easily read how the whole scenario was though he was not in the scene. The interpretations of this passage according to the different versions could be different to different people.
The NIV version has no big magnitude on the state of the people when the man had died, the scenario created seems to be not a very sad thing, but the different versions emphasize by using symbols and strong words and makes the reader feel that indeed death had occurred and that the man was the only son of a widow. Conclusion. Generally the coming up of different versions of the bible have had different impacts on the understanding of the word of God. Many people have different connotations on the different words used in different versions.
There is a need therefore for one to use the best translation which he can understand best to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the bible.
