The captivatingstory by Thomas Wolfe “The Child by Tiger” exemplifies the natural animalisticqualities of human nature. The Sheppertons are delighted with theirnew Negro man, Dick Prosser, for”he could cook, tend to the furnace, heknew how to drive a car…” and he “was a deeply religious man” while beinga very hard worker. …. The desire of being a good person is in the heartof Dick Prosser, but…Dick spills into the darkness and “man’s evil innocence.” …. The religious man, the hard worker, the disciplined and veryintelligent Dick shows hints of “an unknown demon.” He chooses tosmother in the rage of violence. Prosser observes the hints fromthe Shepperton’s cook, Pansy Harris, and he believes her husband is beatingPansy. In an attempt to do what is right, Dick submits to his rageto set goodness free and kills Harris’ husband. This action causesa ricochet event which leads to several killings by the very religiousman, the good …. The only good and decentaction by the townspeople is to catch this wild animan, Dick Prosser, andmake an example of him.
