Life was tough in China during the mid 19th century. People did not have enough food or money, and cities were overpopulated. Young Chinese men heard about opportunities for work in the United States such as farming, gold mining and railroad work. They believed it would be a great place to start over again. Young Chinese men came to this country with great hopes of making money, and sending it back to their families, and eventually returning to their homeland.
Things proved to be different when they arrived and started working in the United States. I can imagine how horrible life was for Chinese immigrant workers at the time. As a group, they made up a large proportion of the Railroad workers. They were forced to work on the most difficult parts of the railroad. Their work day was extremely long. Their living conditions were inadequate; no protection was provided against bad weather or frequent avalanches.
As more Chinese stayed in this country, laws such as Foreign Miner’s Tax and Exclusion Act were made to make life more difficult for these workers so that they could not bring their families to America. I believe they decided to stay in the United States because they still had families waiting for their help back in China. Thus, they wanted to show the United States that they could do something to make it better. Their experiences help me understand that Chinese immigrants are some of the strongest, most resilient and proudest people in the world.
The Homework on The Issues With Balancing School, work And Family
Having a family is a big responsiblity. When you add having three children with going to school and work, it can make life very hectic. Going to school and having a job takes a lot of work. Not only for the person who is dealing with all of these commitments, but for the entire family. They all have to work together as one unit to make it all not only possible, but successful. There are six ...
I believe that many American people still do not know how much about the history of Chinese immigrants and their experiences in the United States. Some do not know how much the Chinese have been contributing to this country. I am not sure exactly why, but the impression I get from looking at an American history textbook is that there is very little mention about Chinese immigrants and their contributions in the United States. Almost all of the focus has been placed on white people of European background and their role in the development of this country. Without Chinese people’s contributions, America might not have become what it is today, one of the richest, smartest and strongest countries in the world.
Chinese immigrant’s contributions included building railroads, reclaiming lands, and transforming the Sacramento delta into one of the world’s greatest farming lands. I felt it was unfair to the Chinese that their contributions were missing from most of the United States history textbooks. I hope that future American historians will mention more about the history and experience of this minority group in their history textbooks. More people should know about what happened to Chinese immigrants during growth of the whole country.
While I watched the documentary “Ancestors in Americas,” I felt sad for those Chinese immigrants who could not return home to see their families in China after long periods of labor during the 19th century. I could imagine how sad their parents, wives, and children felt when they lost their loved ones. I can not imagine how their wives could have had a happy life without having the love of their husbands. Also, I can not imagine how their children could grow to be good people without having a father as a good role model.
I believe that the film tells a fascinating story, including a detailed account of how the Exclusion Act affected Chinese immigrants. This Act banned immigrants groups, including the Chinese, from voting and bringing family members to the United States in order to become American citizens. Being a Vietnamese immigrant in this country, this reflects on me, because of my race. I am permanently a foreigner and somehow not fully American. On the other hand, I can look forward to the day when I can become an American citizen will all the rights that it allows for me.
The Term Paper on Critical analysis of Good Country People by Flannery O’ Connor
Good Country People is one of the most sought after works of Flannery O’ Connor. It is said to be the biography of O’Connor but she never claimed it to be such. The novel Good Country People seems to reflect the current situation and emotional status of O’ Connor while she was writing the novel, and if it is not in fact her biography, her emotion at that time has influenced the novel greatly. ...
Chinese laborers did not have to learn English very well because they stayed and worked within their own group. They learned only a little English if they wanted to communicated within their supervisors. On the other hand, it is very important that I learn English very well. I want to get a better education at a university so that I can have the some opportunities as all Americans do. As a worker, it is important for me to know English to communicate with all people in the workforce, including supervisors and coworkers.
In the present day, the United States is much more racially diverse than in the time of the Chinese labors. Due in largely to Civil Right laws, groups of people that are not white are more readily accepted than they used to be. More equal opportunities are provided for minorities. Education is available for immigrants today unlike when earlier Chinese immigrants came over. I am fortunate because of this. I have had to struggle as an immigrant who came to this country without being able to speak the language. I still do, but every day I am learning more and trying to achieve success. Even though I have been in this country for a few years, some people think I was born here. It is easier now to be accepted as an American as opposed to being identified only as a member of a certain ethnic group.
I have experienced prejudice, racism and discrimination against me over many years in my life since I came to the United States. For example, every time I tried to say hi to my boss, he never said hi back to me. When I asked him for a username and password in order to logon on the computer, he did not give it to me. When another student worker asked him for it, he gave it to that person. I had a feeling that he discriminated against me. I believe that this country can do something to reduce this problem. The experience of these Chinese immigrants proved that, if a group of people worked hard for the improvement of the country, they were not often appreciated nor treated fairly. The United States needs to show the world that this is a country of hope, freedom and liberty – not a country of prejudice, racism and discrimination.
