Everyone dreams, but no one knows exactly why it happens. A dream usually occurs while someone is asleep. They consist of images of things that usually go along with what is happening in a person’s life at that time. Some dreams can be very vivid while others may not have a lot to them.
There are many different types of dreams. Nightmares, lucid dreams, and recurring dreams are some that have many similarities and also many differences. Nightmares are disturbing dreams that often cause the dreamer to awaken suddenly, feeling anxious and frightened (“The Lucidity Institute Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Lucid Dreaming”).
Nightmares are common among the human race; nearly everyone has experienced a nightmare at least once in their lifetime (“Dream Moods”).
Lucid dreams are normal dreams that occur when the dreamer realizes that they are dreaming (“Dream Moods”).
The dreamer then has the ability to control their dreams and the outcomes. Being able to lucid dream is quite rare, and many people are unable to do it. Recurring dreams are dreams that repeat themselves again and again with little or no variation in the story or the theme. Many people experience recurring dreams throughout their lives.
There are many factors that can affect what a person dreams about. Nightmares can be caused by things that are going on in a person’s life, their relationship, their work, and even from stress. Since lucid dreams are just normal dreams that people can control, they are caused by the same factors of life that nightly dreams are caused by. Recurring dreams are often caused by certain life situations, transitional phases in life, or a problem that keeps coming back over and over again.

The dreamer often has little to no control over what they dream about. In most dream situations, the dreamer is often unaware that they are dreaming. Therefore, they are unable to control what they dream about and what happens in their dreams (“The Lucidity Institute Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Lucid Dreaming”).
Lucid dreamers, however, are aware that they are dreaming, and they are able to control the outcome of their dreams. Lucid dreamers are quite rare, though. The first step to becoming a lucid dreamer is realizing that one is in a dream, and many are unable to accomplish that task (“Dream Moods”).
Those who do, though, are able to control what they and other characters do while in a dream state.
There are many different types of dreams, and one type of dream may vary drastically from another type of dream. There are many factors in a person’s life that may affect what type of dream that person will have. Many people also have very little control over their dreams, yet there are a select few that are able to choose the outcomes of their mind’s nightly fantasy, mystery, or horror.
