In today’s american culture, sports is at the top of numerous popularity surveys lists. With the all the aggression, entertainment, and fun, sports bring to us it’s hard to disagree why sports is so popular. But at times we often tend to put winning in sports over education and equality in schools. For years now schools in the United States have been looking past the word student in student athlete. By changing grades, SATs, and paying them to play. While non-student athletes students receive no where near the same treatment. I believe that football and basketball student-athletes should not have extra benefits, also shouldn’t change grades and SAT scores so they could play, and should be treated as non student-athletes.
From high school to college, athletes are told to recognize the word student in student athlete. The term “student-athletes” implies that all enrolled students who play college sports are engaged in secondary (“extracurricular”) activities that enhance their education. But at some schools in america, being a student comes second to the playing fields. At a few top Division 1 schools their athletes have scored 200 points lower than rest of the student body on the SAT. According to the Journal Constitution, the University of Florida football team averaged 346 points lower than their peers on the SAT. Also UCLA a distinguished athletic and educational school had the biggest gap between all athletics and the student body in the nation with 247 points on the SAT.
The Homework on Pros And Cons Of High School Sports
Driving past a local high school, one can not help notice the hundreds of students participating in after school activities. From the football team practicing drills on the field to the cross country runners jogging around the school. All of these students have something in common. They have all volunteered their valuable time to participate in high school athletics. Students play sports for many ...
Schools have went as far changing SAT scores and grades to allow athletes to play for the teams. On a report by ESPN, Derrick Rose a former University of Memphis point guard and current NBA all star of the chicago bulls, was reported for cheating on the SAT to be able to pass the standards of the University of Memphis admission so he can play. The university surveyed over this situation and no discipline to the player occured. There has also been a report by ESPN saying that Auburn University football has been changing grades for their players to allow them to play. In which no penalties from the school was given but the NCAA had the morality to punish both teams.
Including the benefits that football and basketball athletes receive in the classroom they also receive things on the field and personally. For years these athletes have been paid for attending the without being caught. But in 2008 and 2010 a report by the NCAA showed that in 2004 the University of Southern California paid Reggie Bush and his family over $25,000 to play for their football team. Another report by espn showed that Auburn University paid Cam Newton $20,000 to play for their team. But football athletes athletes receive even more benefits. They receive a full ride scholarship which takes care of their tuition, books, meal plan, and rooms. While non athletes have to pay for their tuition and etc. They also receive free gear from the top sports companies and clothing. While other students have to pay for their items from the university.
But other people defend what’s occurring between the athletes and schools. They argue that athletes work hard for the benefits they inherit because they’re putting their body through relentless stress in training to make themselves better in their sport. They also argue that athletes should not worry about being students as long as their talent shows on the field because they want to win. By winning means more publicity, sponsorships, and income for the school. So if they have to pay players to attend their school and play so they can win then so be it.
The Essay on To What Extent Should High School Students Be Allowed To
To What Extent Should High School Students be allowed to Exercise Freedom of Speech While on Campus I think that nowadays to deal with an issue of students free speech rights is a tough problem for High School administrators. The matter is that students free speech is protected by the First Amendment. Thus it means that students are allowed to exercise free speech while on campus. But what should ...
Even though football and basketball athletes are talented they still should not receive some benefits that they don’t deserve. SAT scores and grades should not be changed. Because it’s an unfair advantage to other students who didn’t do well on the SAT so they cant be admitted to the school they want to. Being an athlete myself its great to see benefits i’ve earned thrown my way by my school. But by all means it’s great to win but paying players illegally is just morally wrong. Athletes already receive free tuition, clothes, and food which is fine. But any more benefits than that is unfair to the rest of the student body that is working their tail off.
Student athletes of football and basketball shouldn’t be receiving extra benefits in class or personally from school officials who want to win and receive more money. Because regular students are bringing in money for colleges and the only thing they’re receiving is a college education. Because I believe that student-athletes of football and basketball should not have extra benefits, grades and SAT scores shouldn’t be changed and should be treated as non student-athletes.
