How many people in our community are actually honest? How many people can you think of that will be straightforward with you even if they make you look bad? In the Crucible, there are only a few people who are honest and most of them died because of it. One of the most honest people in the Crucible is John Proctor. Proctor told people how it is every time. He hurt many people because he never lied about what he thought. He did keep one lie about having an affair with Abigail Williams but, at the end of the play he admits it to try to save many people, especially his wife Elizabeth. Also, Proctor was given the chance to save his life and his wife’s life if he could just lie.
At first Proctor did lie. Then he realized how much his name meant to him and he could not put his name under a lie. When asked for his written confession and why he could not give it to the court Proctor said,” Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” Because Proctor could not lie to save himself, he was hung. Some other honest people are Giles and Martha Corey. Giles is an 83-year old man that is a workhorse.
He will never stop working until the day he dies. He is also a very honest man. John Proctor told Giles about Putnam trying to build his land empire. When Giles told Mr. Danforth about this, Danforth asked for the name of the person who told Giles this.
The Essay on People Lie Lies Feel Lying
Oops, I just told a lie. It was a little white lie but still, I lied. Why did I lie What an interesting thought: Why After thinking about this most complex question I came up with a variety of reasons why people find justification in lying. Be mindful that most of my thoughts stem from books or articles I have read about the not so honest people living in society. I know someone who has made bad ...
Giles is good friend and honest man so he would no reveal his name. Danforth tortured Giles by “Pressing” him. This is when stones are put on top of someone until they tell the court what they want to know, or die. Giles would never tell on Proctor so he died.
Martha Corey is Giles wife. Martha stood up in Church one time and laughed at the Stuff Reverend Parris was saying. Martha was honest and had her own opinion on things. Martha got charged with the murder of Mrs. Putnam’s kids. She was hung the same day as Proctor.
One other honest person in this story is Mr. Hale. At first Mr. Hale goes right along believing the girls. He thought that they saw witches and believed every word just like everyone else.
Then, slowly Hale started realizing how far-fetched their stories were. At the end of the story, Hale was fighting against the Church. He was telling Danforth that the girls are living. This was a total turn-around from when Mr. Hale first came to Salem. The Witch Trials helped open his eyes and realize how ignorant the Church is.
In a Puritanical society, honest people that stick out get nailed for it. Almost all the honest people in Salem died. They died because the Church hated how honest people saw right through the church and realized they were just trying to scare them. The Church was scared that the honest people would expose the Church and open other people’s eyes. Unfortunately, the honest people in Salem died before they could accomplish this.
