The crusades where a type of holy wars. Holy wars have been fought for centuries going as far back as the Egyptians and David. The Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III inspired his army to fight because they are fighting for the god Amun-Re. David on the other hand was fighting because God called him to which in turn inspired his army. Holy wars have been fought for many reasons most of which have been to win back sacred lands. The crusades are prime examples of this especially, the people’s crusade and the first crusade.
To understand the crusades you must understand why the Christians want to take back the holy lands. According to web this is because the Muslims lead by Muhammad took them by force during the 7 th century. Soon after he had enough men to win Mecca.
He did so and began to take over the whole Middle East. In doing so he took over Jewish and Christians lands and killed or converted many of the others. This is why the Muslims have control of the holy lands which the crusades were to win back. The first crusade not called the first but the peoples crusades was lead by Peter the Hermit and fought my many poor French people this is also called the poor crusade.
