Have you ever had a sunburn that was so bad that about a week later your skin started to peel, well this happened to a woman named Sharon Lasky. In her childhood she got her share of sunburns and now is paying the price. Two years ago at the age of 40 she was diagnosed with an intermediate-stage melanoma. According to the health journal Heart and Soul, it has been proven that “people who experienced blistering sunburns earlier in their life are particularly susceptible to malignant melanomas later on in life”.
Hi, my name is Christie and today I will persuade to you that the harmful effects of the sun far outweigh the novelty of having a tan. Many people particularly high school and college-age students want nothing to do with sunscreen. Myself included, until I saw my mother’s friend had to have her nose removed because she had skin cancer. Before she was a very beautiful woman but after the operation she looked like a monster because her nose was replaced by two large holes in the center of her face. No one will see her outer beauty again. All she has left is her inner beauty. Today I would like to encourage you to protect your self from the sun by wearing sunscreen and sunglasses.
People with fair skin, light hair, blue eyes, and or freckles are the people who are most likely to get sun damage. It is important that they are aware of this so that they can take extra precautions to protect themselves from the suns harmful rays. Some of these extra precautions are:

1. Using no less than SPF 15 that shields against UVA and UVB rays
2. Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going into the sun and reapply every 2 hours
3. Use liberally, it takes about an ounce of sunscreen to cover the body and 8-ounce bottle shouldn’t last more that a week at the beach.
4. And always wearing sunglasses when ever they are out side
It is not only fair skinned people that have to worry about the harmful effects of the sun. Many people think or like to think that just because they are naturally tan or dark skinned that that they don’t have to worry about the sun. They are only kidding themselves by thinking that. The sun is just as damaging to dark skin it is just not as visible at first. But over time the sun prematurely ages your skin turning baby-soft skin in to something that resembles a rhinoceros hide. This in some ways is worse than the effects on fair skinned people because they can see what the sun is doing to their skin so they will limit their sun exposure. But tan people don’t realize that the sun is actually adding years on to their skin until the damage is already done. Many people think that they are only going to get sun burnt if they are outside on a sunny day for along time. However this is not true the FDA has said that the skin begins to burn after 10 min. of exposure to the sun. Some other misconceptions about the sun is the false belief that you can’t get burnt when it is overcast or if you are in the shade, there is still enough light to burn your skin. Another misconception is when it is cold out side and you can’t feel the heat of the sun. Just because the temperature is cool does not mean that the sun is any less potent.
The importance of sunscreen is incomparable. According to ‘Brandweek’ the largest group of people that don’t wear sunscreen is men. Men even more than kids dread sunscreen. They view it to be a cosmetic item more then an outdoor necessity. Also according to Brandweek only 40% of adults use sun care regularly and 25% say that they never do. This frightening statistic shows why sun damage is the most deadly type of skin cancer. If cancer is detected and removed before it penetrates a full millimeter into the skin the likely hood of recovery is at about 95%. However, if the if the cancer is not caught at an early stage, the chances of surviving is less than 50 %.
The Essay on Light Vs Dark Skinned Black People
Light vs. Dark Today we watched a movie in class on light skinned black people and dark skinned black people. The movie was based on the discrimination between the two colors. There are many tones of blackness and according to the movie there is a battle between the different shades of who is the dominant shade. Once the movie concluded we discussed it, and talked about what we thought of the ...
Your eyes are just as sensitive if not more to the sun than your skin. People with light eyes particularly blue and green are very sensitive to the sun and should always wear sunglasses when ever they are outdoors.
For those of us who love to go to the beach this presents somewhat of a problem and especially because we live in Florida and the suns rays are more intense here than they are in some place like Chicago. Therefore no one in Florida is exempt from wearing sunscreen no matter how tan or dark skinned you are.
In conclusion, sunscreen is a must for outdoors and especially in Florida. If you think that you don’t need sunscreen just ask my mother’s friend how much she didn’t need sunscreen. So, if you value you life and your body I encourage you to wear sun protection and limit prolonged sun exposure.
Now if you would all stand and say a pledge with me:
I value my life and my body and I will protect my self from the sun by wearing sunscreen and sunglasses.
