The Dark Side of KFC The fastfood industry has globally conquered the market of fast-paced people who want instant service the moment they need it, wherever they are. Food primed and ready for cooking the moment a customer orders it has become the sustenance of most of the worlds workforce. Fastfood eating has spread from the United States to Europe and Australia up to the Africa including the predominantly home-cooked diners in Asia. With the vast increase and proliferation of this particular industry come the inevitable problems and anomalies. For the purpose of limiting the topic, the discussion will focus on one particular subsidiaries of the YUM! Brands — KFC. The discussion will cover the three major issues which have become so big that they have affected people on all levels of the companys operations including their service. KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) rules the roost when it comes to chicken.
It has become America’s #1 fast-food chicken chain with more than 14,000 outlets in more than 100 countries. The restaurants offer the Colonel’s trademark fried chicken (in both Original Recipe and Extra Tasty Crispy varieties) along with chicken sandwiches, chicken pot pies, crispy chicken strips, mashed potatoes and gravy, and potato wedges. Its locations can be found operating as free-standing units and kiosks (in shopping malls, gas stations, and airports).

KFC, the company who “Do Chicken Right!”, is not a stranger to the countless issues that can lead to anomalies like unlawful practices (labor and environmental), irregularities in the acquisition of food supplies and lacking transparency with regard to GMOs in its food products including false claims about their products. All through the course of KFCs operations and expansions, it can be noted that reports about its transgressions encompasses every corner of the world.
According to reports from a particular department in the Korean government, KFC is one among six international franchise food companies that were found under-paying workers as well as hiring minors. These accounts are just two of the numerous irregularities that KFC committed against its direct employees. Apart from these, there are also some alleged abuses which directly affect those workers working for KFCs agricultural suppliers. Farm workers have started several protests against KFC yet the company said the protesters efforts are “misdirected” since the labor dispute is between the workers and their employers. It was also reported that in order to lower down operational expenses, KFC do not conform to several agreements regarding animal welfare and environmental conservation.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an international entity safe-guarding the welfares of animals, accused KFC and its chicken suppliers of mass cruelty against chickens in slaughter houses. PETA requests that the company produce proof it has reduced the cruel treatment of animals by their suppliers but KFC refused to respond. The PETA launched its “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” campaign against KFC after did not follow other big food corporations move to adopt new measures for the treatment of animals raised by their suppliers.
PETA, in July 2003, filed a complaint in the California Superior Court to seek an injunction against KFC and its parent company, Yum! for making false statements about its animal welfare practices in advertisements and on the company’s website. It was also noted that KFC refuses to give any comment regarding accusations that most of their food supplies do not conform to standards implemented by different governmental agencies. Although Yum! Brands presented a resolution in 2005 requesting KFC to submit a report on the impacts of genetically engineered products including information on the extent of GE product use, the environmental impacts of continued GE product use, and a plan for phasing out genetically engineered products (Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility, online), nothing has come out of it as of this writing. The companys transgressions and aberrations are happening because of their motive to lower the cost of the products they are offering to be competitive with their existing business rivals products. As a consequence, the quality of the products is compromised; the company is pushed to allocate bigger budget on advertising to dispel any worries that consumers might have about their products. Several consumer product agencies are concerned about how KFC build the image of their company through false claims regarding their products. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the U.S. charged KFC Corporation with making false claims in a national television advertising campaign about the relative nutritional value and healthiness of its fried chicken.

The ad in question further states that Two KFC breasts have less fat than a BK Whopper. Although it is true that the two fried chicken breasts have slightly less total fat and saturated fat than a Whopper, they have more than three times the trans fat and cholesterol, more than twice the sodium, and more calories. Food additives and components that are not healthy and so therefore can never be a part of any healthy diet. The KFC is surrounded by these issues but the most that they do to answer them is issue press releases that do not actually give any solution to the problems.
