The Day of the Jackal While reading the Edgar Award winning best novel of 1972, The Day of the Jackal, a thriller novel by Frederick Forsyth that was published in 1971, I realized that this book was so good that it would be considered as a classic in the next 50 to 100 years. The storyline in the novel by the author of The Day of the Jackal is based on a professional killer who is contracted by a French terrorist group to assassinate Charles de Gaulle. The time period of this story is in the early 1960s, has been portrayed with conviction and the plot of this high class spy fiction is so well thought out that it earned the writer of this novel a lot of respect in the literary world. The novel is notable because the assassin known as the Jackal is contracted by the terrorist organization, OAS which existed in France and his target was a real life historical figure. The novel has proved to be so effectively chilling, suspenseful, realistic, and gripping that a reader would not like to stop reading it till its very end and would definitely consider the book as a classic. The superb writing style of the author has been such that the plot can be split up in two parts with the first dealing with the reasoning and motivation behind the assassination plans where during the negotiations for the kill the Jackal demands Half a million.
In cash. Half in advance, and half on completion The OAS man inquires, Half a million francs to which the Jackal answers Dollars Considering you expect to get France in return, Id have thought it a reasonable price. The deal is struck and the Jackal makes preparations for the assassination. In the second part the French Intelligence discover the plot and assigns their best detective to apprehend the Jackal and in the final part of the novel the detective realizes that the Jackal is going to assassinate de Gaulle on the Liberation Day of France. With the first shot the Jackal misses him and before he can fire a second shot, the French detective kills him with machine gun fire. It is only then that the Detective and the Jackal briefly look and call each other by their names of “Jackal” and “Lebel”. In the end part of the book, the author cleverly portrays the grudging respect that had developed between the Jackal and the French detective when the Jackal is buried as an unknown with only the detective in attendance.
