The Difference in the Plans of Greek Cross and Latin Cross Latin Cross is traditional cross we see every day on the most churches. When looking at Latin Cross, it resembles a man standing with his arms outstretched. Anchor Cross Many early Christians saw the anchor as a disguised form of the cross. It came from words of St. Paul to the Hebrews, We have this as a sure and stead fast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine. Those words caused the symbol of hope to take on the deeper meaning of a heavenly hope anchored to the Cross of Christ.
The symbol of the Trident was found later than the anchor, but was not widely used as the anchor. Alpha and Omega Cross Lines from the Book of Revelation are where this image comes from. I am the Alpha and Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last the beginning and the end. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet and have been used as Christian signs of the omnipotence of God and are images found with Christ. Also, they are associated with the Chi-Rho and the cross.
In most mosaics the symbols are placed on each side of the upright or between the arms of the cross. Greek Cross The horizontal branch cuts the vertical branch in two. This makes all the arms of equal length. At first glance it almost looks to be an upside down cross or the St. Peters cross. Which of course is regarded as diabolic or just the opposite of what the cross stands for.
The Essay on Prejudice In Greek System
The Civil War was over 130 years ago, and racial issues still stand even though it has been so long. It amazes me that discrimination and racism carries on today, especially among such younger generations such as college students. One would think that the younger generations would be more aware and more understanding of racial issues. After all it is these younger generations which were raised ...
That kind of made me laugh and wonder at the same time. Saint Andrews Cross The name for this cross is derived from the Latin numeral X. According to tradition the apostle Andrew was martyred on a cross in the form of the letter X, because he felt he was unworthy to be crucified like his Lord. It is a symbol of suffering and humility. It is basically the Greek cross turned 45 degrees. Tau Cross It is also know as the Saint Anthonys cross. This was the sign made by the Israelites on their doorposts at the Exodus. It was also the sign on which Moses raised the Brazen Serpent.
It is called the Tau cross for its resemblance to the Greek letter T. It is the emblem of Saint Anthony of Egypt. It is the Old Testament cross. It is basically the letter T. Papal Cross This cross is the Latin cross with horizontal arms that are each slightly longer than the one above. It is used in Papal processions.
It is thought to maybe represent the three areas of responsibility which all the ordain share with Christ, leader of worship, teacher, community leader. Since the pope uses it regularly the three bars could represent the Popes three realms of authority: the church, the world, and heaven. Celtic Cross Were first found during the early Christian period in Great Britain and Ireland. This was between AD 400-700. On pillar-stones and sculptured stones crosses were found. There were carved with characteristic Celtic additions such as interlacing, spiral and key patterns, conventional animals interlaced, and figure subjects. The typical Celtic cross consisted of a circle at the top of the shaft connecting the arms.
Some say that with all the elaborate design and additions that it would be hard for the craftsman to actually be dedicated to the glory of God. Patriarchal Cross This cross has two horizontal arms, the upper one shorter than the lower. This style of cross is seen in early Byzantine art. It is also sometimes mistakenly called the Cross of Lorraine. The upper cross branch stands for the panel of the inscription fastened to the upright by order of Pontius Pilate at the time of Crucifixion. Russian Cross Also known as the Eastern cross.
The Term Paper on Ancient Celtic Mythology A Vision Of Gods And Goddesses
Upon investigating the supernatural reality that the Celts endured, it is necessary to somewhat overlook the myths to see what lies behind them. It is essential to find when and from where the myths originated and how true the storytellers, or narrators, really are. The Celtic gods and goddesses, in such an early mythological time defined as a period when beings lived or events happened such as ...
Take the patriarchal cross and add a slanting smaller arm near the foot of the cross. The upper bar represents the inscription that Pilate had placed above Jesus head. What the meaning of the slanted bar is lost in legend. One story is that Jesus legs were of unequal length. Another story is that the earthquake that at His death caused the cross to tilt. The most likely idea is that the slanted bar forms St.
Andrews cross who is believed to introduce Christianity to Russia. Ansated or Ankh Cross At first glance this cross resembles a tau cross with a loop on the top. The ankh is actually the Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for life. Also, it was used by the Copts who the Egyptian Christians. This form is linked with the belief that the cross is the tree of life. Art History Project The Cross What first caught my eye about this project was on page two hundred eighty in my art history book.
It has the small box with eight variations of crosses. The one that really interested was the Greek cross. Looking quickly made it appear like an upside down cross. I was thinking, Okay. That variation of the cross looks almost like the total opposite of what the cross stands for. It represents the power of the anti-christ.
Before seeing that panel I had no idea that there were so many different designs of the cross. Most of the cross variations I have seen before, but they were so different that I didnt even consider them to be a cross. As I looked more and more and found information on the crosses the more I became interested to understand them all. I had no idea for all the in depth reasons why certain cross were shaped a certain. When I first thought about doing the project I decided I would make small miniature models of the crosses. Then I started looking more and found that there were just way too many crosses to make models for all. I wanted to have a presentation so everybody could see the different designs of the crosses easily and understand what Im talking about.
So I then decided to just do it simple and easily visible; white paper crosses on black poster board. You can see it perfectly and tell the differences of each cross.
