It is said that men dominate this field because men are expected to commit crime and women are not (Holland, 2008).
I beg to differ, women should be given the same opportunity that men are given because women are capable of doing everything that a man is able to do, in some cases even better. In current times, you will find that more and more women are being employed in our prisons and jails. Once they are employed they do face a very harsh reality. The work force is very difficult for women in the first place, so when faced with working in a male dominated field women face very challenging situations.
When it comes to promotions, women are not treated like a man would be in the very same field; nor are they given the same support systems or networking opportunities as men (Holland, 2008).
A man will be presented with the option to join in networking opportunities to be able to expand his scope of work. On the other hand a woman would indeed be passed over for this opportunity. Also women face sexual harassment as in issue in the correctional facilities (Holland, 2008).
It is very rare that a man employed in a prison facility will experience sexual harassment for the simple fact that he is a man.
When a woman is employed in a prison or jail, she faces the chance of being harassed sexually by staff and the prisoners. That alone is a very scary fate. Knowing that this is something that we face in the corrections system, it’s likely to deter us as women from even inquiring about employment. Upon reading the periodical, I have to say that I partially agree with the author. Even though time has progressed, we still face tremendous problems. I am employed at a law firm and I noticed that mostly all of the support staff are women while out of 25 attorneys, we only have three women attorneys.
The Essay on Women Men Gender Society
Throughout many decades women have been struggling to be equal to men, both at home and in the work place. Women have come a long way and are certainly fighting to gain that equality, but gender roles are very important in our society. They have become important in life from birth, and society continues to push these gender roles. The treatment of the male gender is very different from that of the ...
Every male attorney except for the new ones have made partner while only two of the women are partners and some of the men have been employed with the firm for shorter amounts of time. This fact in itself is enough to see that men generally dominate the corrections system. The author mentioned that women have experience fewer barriers in the last few years in regards to the corrections system (Holland, 2008).
If that were correct, there would be more women in law, more women police officers, and more women judges. In conclusion, I have to say that I think that women will always rank low on the totem oll in the work force, especially in the criminal justice field. I have heard of several instances where a woman is doing the same job a man is doing, but she is being paid less. We are not given the same opportunities as men, nor are we considered for the same promotions. Even if we are able to provide a service better than a man, we are still over looked.
